Braves too much for juniors in spring camp opener

ORLANDO-The Atlanta Braves had eleven hits and took advantage of four errors to defeat the Junior National 10-0 as the annual Spring Training Camp at ESPN Wide World of Sports kicked-off.

Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, ON) started for the Juniors and tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings giving up only one hit.

The Braves struck for two runs in the top of the third off new pitcher Michael Clouthier (Guelph, ON). A lead-off single followed by an error gave the Braves runners on the corners with none out. Clouthier then hit a batter and allowed a bases loaded walk to score the first run of the game and a fielder’s choice put the Braves in front by two.

The Braves would add to their lead in the top of the fourth when a lead-off single stole second and scored on an RBI base-hit.

Clouthier threw two innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk, while striking out two batters.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jacob Robson (Windsor, ON) walked with one out before being picked-off. Jamar Burnette (Toronto, ON) tried his best to get things going on offence as he walked, stole second and third base, but was left stranded when Nathan DeSouza (Milton, ON) popped-out to end the inning.

Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) entered the game in the fifth inning and after striking out the first batter he faced allowed four hits, including two doubles, and the Braves scored three runs to make the score 6-0.

Quantrill settled in nicely after that and threw two perfect innings that saw him strikeout one batter. Quantrill tossed three frames and gave up three runs on four hits to go along with two strikeouts.

Offensively, Jacob Robson had two singles and a walk, while Johnny Caputo (Toronto, ON), Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON), Kyle Hann (Oakville, ON) and Jamar Burnette singled to give the Juniors six hits.

Brock Dykxhoorn (Goderich, ON) tossed a perfect eighth inning in his JNT debut before the Braves scored four times in the top of the ninth to make the score 10-0. None of the four runs were earned as the Juniors committed two errors in the inning.
