Juniors blanked by Nationals

ORLANDO-The Washington Nationals prospects used thirteen hits to score six runs and struck out ten Junior National Team batters in recording a 6-0 victory at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Nats scored a run in the second, sixth and eighth frames before adding three in the ninth to secure the shutout win.

JNT starter Dayton Dawe (London, ON) allowed only a one run on two hits in three innings of work and struck out one batter.

The run came in the top of the second inning when Dawe gave up a walk and two singles to put the Nats on the scoreboard.

Dawe came back strong in the third as he recorded three consecutive outs on two fly-outs and a line-out.

Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON) had one of four JNT hits on the day as he singled in the second inning, but was left stranded on first base.

Clayton Isherwood (Van Anda, BC) took the mound in the fourth inning and escaped trouble by getting two ground outs to end the inning after allowing a one-out double where the runner advanced to third base on a passed ball.

Isherwood would toss a scoreless fifth inning before giving up a run which came when a lead-off triple scored on a RBI single to give the Nats a 2-0 lead.

The juniors loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to singles from Johnny Caputo (Toronto, ON) and Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) to lead off the inning. After a fly-out and ground-out, Mitchell Triolo (Scarborough, ON) walked, but all three runners were left on base after a strikeout.

Wyle Cunningham (Calgary, AB) took over for Isherwood in the seventh and gave up a lead-off single before picking the runner off at first base. Cunningham retired the next two batters, but the Nationals got to him in the eighth when a lead-off double scored on a RBI single.

The Nationals added three runs in the fourth thanks to a JNT error and a string of four consecutive hits to give them a 6-0 cushion.

Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON) had the other hit for the JNT, a single in the eighth inning.
