Maritimes Grey earns Tournament 12 championship!

TORONTO- After 23 games in four days, the inaugural champion of Tournament 12, hosted by the Toronto Blue Jays, is Maritimes Grey, who represented Atlantic Canada.

An unbelievable day on the mound featured a no-hitter by Andrew Case of Maritime Grey in the semi-finals and Myles Vincent tossed six no-hit innings for Maritimes Grey in the championship game before Sebastiano Scalzo of Québec Blue broke the no-hitter with an infield single off reliever Jesse Borden in the seventh.

Québec made things interesting scoring four runs with two out, but a ground out to Nick Leggatt at first base gave Maritimes Grey a 7-4 win and the Tournament 12 title.

The Maritimes struck early against a Québec Blue team that was playing their third game of the day.

Mitchell Hazlett’s RBI double in the first highlighted a three-run inning and they led by five after four innings.

Vincent was in control early and fashioned six no-hit innings with four strikeouts.

Hazlett picked-up his second RBI of the game after a sac-fly in the fourth and Cody Schrider gave his team a commanding 6-0 lead when he drilled a solo homer to left field in the fifth inning.

Maritimes Grey finished the tournament with an overall record of five wins and one loss that came after they had already clinched first place in pool play.

Here’s a recap of both semi-final games and the last two round-robin games that took place earlier today:

Semi-final #1: Maritimes (Grey) 4 Québec (Blue) 0

Andrew Case turned in a brilliant performance on the mound striking out 13, allowing only one walk as he led Maritimes Grey into the championship game of Tournament 12. Case was perfect until the sixth when he walked a batter with two-out before recording his twelfth strikeout of the game to end the inning. Four Québec pitchers limited the Maritimes to only one hit, but combined to walk 15 batters. Nolan Levy scored the games only run as he singled to lead-off the top of the first, stole second before moving to third on a ground out and scoring on a sac-fly off the bat of Mitchell Hazlett.

Semi-final #2: Québec (Blue) 9 Ontario (Maroon) 2

Québec Blue joined Maritimes Grey in the championship game after they earned a convincing 9-2 win over Ontario Maroon in the second semi-final of the day. Pitcher’s Pat Lalonde and Vincent Desy combined to limit Ontario hitters to only two hits, while Abraham Toro and Vincent Dion each collected two hits with Toro driving in three runs and Dion cashing in two. Maroon didn’t help themselves committing three errors on defence and allowed runs in five out of the seven innings played.

Québec (Blue) 5 BC (Orange) 1

Québec Blue solidified a semi-final spot on the strength of starting pitcher Jeremie Laperle’s strong six innings on the mound. Laperle scattered five hits and walked two, while striking out six in limiting BC to only one run which came with his team leading 3-0. Québec scored three runs in the first with one coming in on a wild-pitch, while the other two scored on the same play where two errors were committed. Philippe Blaquiere had two hits for Québec and Nicolas Favaro picked-up a pair of hits for BC.

Québec (White) 12 Alberta (Red) 11

Québec White scored six runs in the fourth inning and held off a late surge from Alberta to earn a trip to the semis with a 12-11 win. Jonathan Martin’s two-run single accounted for two of the runs in the fourth as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI’s. Martin’s teammate Charles LeBlanc had a 3-for-5 day at the plate and drove in three runs as Québec managed 11 hits. Alberta was led offensively by Wylie Johnston who smacked two doubles and drove in four runs as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He raised his average for the tournament to .700 with one home run and nine RBI’s. Québec led 5-0 after an inning and a half only to see Alberta put up six runs in the bottom of the second.
