OTTAWA-Canadian Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) of the Pittsburgh Pirates and JP Arencibia of the Toronto Blue Jays were announced today as nominees for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.

Morneau, one of 30 club nominees announced, will represent his former club, the Minnesota Twins during the voting process where fan voting counts for one vote in addition to votes counting from a panel of voters.

The annual award recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet pays tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Beginning on September 17th and ending on October 6th, fans can vote for one of 30 club nominees by visiting: www.chevybaseball.com

Morneau won the American League MVP in 2006 as a member of the Twins and has represented Canada in all three World Baseball Classic events.

The 32 year-old is hitting .260 with 17 home runs and 75 RBI’s this season in 141 games combined with the Twins and Pirates.
