National Championships: Abbotsford Continues to Roll

OTTAWA- Sheldon Poirier (Abbotsford, BC) had an incredible day at the plate, belting 2 homeruns as Abbotsford cruised to an 11-1 win over Winnipeg South at the Peewee Western championship in Brandon, MB. Poirier’s first blast was a 3 run job in the 1st inning followed by a 2 run shot in the 2nd inning. The game was shortened to 5 innings because of the 10 run mercy rule. Luxton Glor (Winnipeg, MB) was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Winnipeg South offensively.

Zachery Comeault (Pitt Meadows, BC) had three hits, an RBI and scored 2 runs and Nick Carusi (Burnaby, BC) had three hits and scored 2 runs as Ridge Meadows defeated Regina 14-6.

B.J. Moen (Swift Current, SK) hit a homerun run as the Saskatoon Braves beat the Saskatoon Blue Jays 5-2.

Jordan Robertson (Brandon, MB) was 4 for 4 with 1 RBI as host Brandon thumped Spruce Grove 13-3.

Junior

On the strength of a Jacob Gosselin-Deschênes (St-Hyacinthe, QC) 1 hitter, Québec hammered Saskatchewan 13-0 at the Junior championship in Trois-Riviéres. The no-hit bid was broken in the top of the 5th inning when Saskatchewan’s Craig Hucul (Saskatoon, SK) hit a single to lead-off the inning. Offensively, Québec was lead by Dany Deschamps (Montréal, QC) who scored 3 runs and had 2 hits. Québec also benefitted from 7 Saskatchewan errors.

Daniel Worb (Winnipeg, MB) had a base-hit that scored 2 runs in the 5th as Manitoba defeated Nova Scotia by 5-2 score.

Mike Tavenor (Corner Brook, NL) hit a double in the top of the 7th that brought home the tying and go- ahead runs as Newfoundland hung on the beat New Brunswick 6-5. Tavenor also picked up the win as he pitched a complete game.

Midget

At the Midget championship in London, ON, Tyler Lawrence (Belle River, ON) pitched 6 innings of 3 hit ball and picked up the win as Ontario got by New Brunswick 3-1. Koddi Quick (Leamington, ON) had an RBI single and scored a run to highlight a 3 run 5th inning for Ontario. New Brunswick was able to cut the lead to two in the 6th when Brady Oxford (Fredericton, NB) scored on a fielder’s choice. Tim Black (Mount Hope, ON) would come on to pitch the 7th inning and earn the save for Ontario.

Markus Ferguson (Edmonton, AB) was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI as Alberta cruised to a 7-1 victory over Manitoba. Mitchell St. Laurent (Edmonton, AB) tossed a complete game victory.

Cam Firth (London, ON) hit a 3 run homer in 4th to lead London to 5-0 shutout over Québec (1).

Alex Ostrov (Timberlea, NS) threw a complete game as Nova Scotia upended Saskatchewan 5-2. Evan Comeau (Waverly, NS) went 2 for 2 for Nova Scotia while Cole Bauml (Marysburg, SK) was 2 for 4 with an RBI for Saskatchewan.
