National Championships: August 19th Wrap

OTTAWA: Dany Deschamps (Montréal, QC) had 2 hits and 2 RBI as Québec shut out Nova Scotia 8-0 at the Junior championship in Trois-Riviéres. Québec scored all 8 of their runs in the 2nd inning which saw a Deschamps double account for 2 of them.

Philippe Charpentier (Épiphanie, QC) tossed 4 shutout innings and struck out 2 batters in picking up the win.

The other evening game saw Trois-Riviéres move to 2-0 as they dumped New Brunswick 5-0. Jean-Francois Dionne (Trois-Riviéres, QC) was impressive in fashioning a complete game, 1-hitter for Trois-Riviéres.

The host, London Badgers, moved to 2-0 on the day as the topped Alberta by a score of 4-2 at the Midget championship. For the most part it was a pitcher’s duel as both teams only registered 6 hits each. Alberta’s Cashtyn Deleeuw (Grimshaw, AB) took the loss despite striking out 11 batters.

With Alberta clinging to a 1-0 lead in the 6th inning, London scored 4 runs to take the lead. Josh Tetreau (London, ON) and Cam Firth (London, ON) both had RBI singles to highlight the inning offensively for London.

After getting the lead, Tetreau, who was credited with the win and Dayton Dawe (London, ON), who got the save, were able to shut down the Alberta batters the rest of the way.

Derek Fortier (Windsor, ON) went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI as Ontario walked all over Nova Scotia 13-3. In the last game of the day Giles Virgin (Regina, SK) tossed a complete game as Saskatchewan beat Québec (2) by a score of 4-1. Virgin didn’t give up an earned run and struck out 6.

Marshal Burgess (Brandon, MB) doubled with two out and scored winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning as the host Brandon team edged Regina 8-7 in the Peewee Western tournament. Burgess was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Jordan Robertson (Brandon, MB) and Dale Penner (Brandon, MB) had two hits and two RBI each.

Other games saw the Saskatoon Braves pound Winnipeg South 13-6 as Scott Caron (Saskatoon, SK) went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Braxton Dirkham (Saskatoon, SK) had 2 hits, 2 RBI and also stole 2 bases as his Saskatoon Blue Jays topped Edmonton 8-6. Finally, Matt Powell (Devon, AB) picked up the win and struck out 5 as Spruce Grove nipped Mid West 6-5. Morgan Geekie (Strathclair, MB) had 2 RBI for Mid West.
