Québec Completes Perfect Run to Capture 16U Girls National Championship Gold
MONCTON, NB – Québec completed an undefeated run through the 2026 16U Girls National Championship with a 6–5 victory over Alberta in Monday’s gold-medal game at the CN Sportsplex.
The championship game was pushed to Monday after weather forced changes to the original Sunday schedule, but the delay did little to slow two teams meeting for the second time in the tournament.
Alberta struck first, taking advantage of an eventful opening inning to build a 3–0 lead.
Québec answered immediately. Four runs in the bottom of the second erased the deficit and gave Québec its first lead of the game.
Alberta responded with two runs in the third to move back in front 5–4, setting up another Québec rally.
A sacrifice fly tied the game in the fourth before a two-out single brought home the go-ahead run, putting Québec ahead 6–5.
From there, Québec’s pitching and defence took over. Alberta was held scoreless over the final four innings, including a perfect seventh that featured two strikeouts, as Québec secured the national title.
The victory capped a perfect 6–0 championship for Québec.
Québec swept Pool A with victories over Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan before defeating previously unbeaten Manitoba 9–6 in the semifinal. The championship victory was Québec’s second of the tournament over Alberta after a 19–7 result during preliminary play.
Alberta earned silver after a strong week of its own. The team finished preliminary play 3–1, with its only loss coming against Québec, before defeating Ontario 11–5 in the semifinal to earn another opportunity against the eventual champions.
Manitoba Rallies for Walk-Off Bronze
Manitoba capped a dramatic comeback with a 13–12 extra-inning victory over Ontario in Monday’s bronze-medal game.
Ontario appeared to take control after scoring five runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to build a 6–1 advantage.
Manitoba answered with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead 7–6, but the momentum continued to swing.
Ontario scored three in the seventh to regain a 9–7 lead before Manitoba responded with two in the bottom half to force extra innings.
Ontario again moved ahead in extras, scoring three runs to build a 12–9 advantage in the eight and leaving Manitoba facing its third multi-run deficit of the game.
Once again, Manitoba answered.
A run cut the margin to two before a three-run home run completed the comeback, giving Manitoba a 13–12 walk-off victory and the national bronze medal.
The result capped a 5–1 tournament for Manitoba. The team swept Pool B with four consecutive victories before suffering its first loss, 9–6 to Québec, in the semifinal.
Ontario finished fourth after going 2–2 through Pool A and defeating Nova Scotia 11–1 in the tournament’s lone quarterfinal. Ontario then fell 11–5 to Alberta in the semifinal before the extra-inning bronze-medal loss.
