During World War I, he raised his own 50-man machine gun unit and became an honorary colonel. He helped to improve the railway system in Russia, and after the Russian Revolution in 1917, he was responsible for the collection and distribution of food.
Joe had many extraordinary adventures while acting as a spy for Britain and France. Boyle became a close friend and advisor of Queen Marie of Romania, was made a Romanian national hero and received the highest awards from Russia, France and Britain.
