ST. JOHN’S – For the first time in the history of the Canada Games, female baseball will be part of the official competition schedule, as the top 16U female baseball talent in the country will play for gold from August 18–24 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
All ten provinces will send provincial teams to compete in what promises to be a landmark moment for female baseball in Canada. The event will showcase the depth of talent developing across the country while providing athletes the opportunity to compete on one of the nation’s largest amateur sport stages.
The competition features a two-pool, round robin format, leading into playoff and placement contests on August 23. The tournament will culminate on August 24 with the bronze and gold medal games, where Canada Games history will be made as the first-ever female baseball champion is crowned.
The inclusion of female baseball builds on the legacy of Newfoundland and Labrador’s own Jaida Lee, who made history at the 2022 Canada Games in Niagara when she became the first female athlete to compete in the baseball competition. Now, just three years later, dozens of girls will have that same opportunity to proudly represent their provinces - this time on a level playing field created specifically for them.
“Having female baseball officially included in the Canada Games is a significant milestone for the growth of our sport,” said Baseball Canada CEO Jason Dickson. “It reflects both the increasing participation numbers across the country and the high calibre of athletes who continue to emerge from provincial programs.”
Fans in St. John’s can expect a week filled with competitive action, provincial pride, and the continuation of a movement that has seen Canada recognized as one of the world’s leaders in female baseball.
