James Paxton first Canadian selected in MLB Draft

OTTAWA – Canada’s team is sticking close to home with the 37th pick overall in the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft as the Toronto Blue Jays selected left-handed pitcher James Paxton (Ladner, BC) out of the University of Kentucky.

Paxton becomes the first Canadian selected in the 2009 draft which came in the compensation round.

Paxton had one of his best seasons in college baseball in 2009, going 5-2 with a 5.30 ERA in 12 starts. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was incredible this past season as he struck out 109 batters to only 20 walks over 73 innings.
