THUNDER BAY – Sarah Pengelly (Burnaby, BC) tossed five scoreless innings and recorded ten strikeouts while Julia Konigshofer (Waverley, NS) belted a two-run homer and had four RBIs as Canada completed play at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A with a 10-0 win over South Korea.
The win, which ended after five innings due to the WBSC’s “run ahead rule”, gave Canada a 4-1 record, good for second place in the six-team event.
After Pengelly retired the first six hitters she faced, including the first four via strikeout, Konigshofer stepped to the plate with one runner on and one out before depositing a pitch over the wall in left-centre to give Canada a 2-0 lead.
The homer was Canada’s first of the event and came in Konigshofer’s first at-bat of the tournament.
Canada went on to add two runs in the third inning with Emma-Rose Payette (Québec, QC) and Koigshofer collecting RBI singles before adding five runs in the fourth with Justine Marin (L’Assomption, QC) driving in a pair.
Pengelly worked around a one out walk in the fifth before striking out her ninth and tenth batters of the game before Payette connected on her second RBI single in the bottom of the inning that scored Raine Padgham (Abbotsford, BC) with Canada’s tenth run to end the game.
The Women’s National Team program will now focus its efforts on the 2024 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals that will take place in Thunder Bay.
