Women’s Invitational: Semi match-ups set

MONTRÉAL- Defending gold medalists Ontario earned the top seed after round robin play at the Women’s Invitational Championships thanks to a perfect 5-0 record and will play fourth seed Québec tomorrow in the semi finals.

The other semi will feature Alberta and the 21U Prospects squad.

Alberta booked their ticket to the semis with a pair of wins on the final day of round robin play while Ontario capped their perfect record with wins over BC and Ontario 2.

The Ontario vs Québec semi will get underway at 9AM ET at Gary Carter Stadium with the Alberta vs 21U Prospects to follow at Noon. Bronze and gold medal games are set for 4 and 7PM ET, respectively.

Ontario 10, BC 5

Mena Florio earned the win with a six-inning effort on the mound and Kate Psota went 3-for-3 and knocked in three runs to lead Ontario to a 10-5 win over BC. Ella Matteucci also had three RBI for the victors as part of a 2-for-2 game at the plate, while Brittany Chan scored three Ontario runs batting out of the two-hole. Claire Eccles had a double and knocked in three runs for BC.

Alberta 7, 21U Prospects 3

Melissa Armstrong went the distance and did not allow an earned run over seven innings of work as Alberta upended the 21U Prospects, 7-3. Armstrong allowed seven hits and one walk to go along with three strikeouts and received offensive support from McKinlee Kaulbach whose double plated three runs in the first while Hailey Coumont hit an inside-the-park home run in the sixth.

Québec 3, BC 2

In the closest contest of the tournament, Québec scored twice in the fifth including an RBI single from Andréanne Leblanc to squeak by BC, 3-2. Erica Ahad picked up the win after going five and two-thirds innings on the mound, while BC’s Jenn Gilroy took the loss after pitching six innings for BC.

Ontario 12, Ontario (2) 0

Ontario put the finishing touches on a perfect 5-0 record in round robin play with a convincing 12-0 win over Ontario 2. Ella Matteucci did it on the mound and in the batter’s box tossing three scoreless innings and going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Emma Carr had a 3-for-3 game with a double and knocked in four Ontario runs.

Alberta 8, Québec 4

Nicole Luchanksi belted two doubles and drove in two runs and Madison Willan drove in two while also contributing five solid innings pitched on the mound to lead Alberta to an 8-4 win over Québec and a spot in the semi finals. McKinlee Kaulbach kept her strong day going with a double and two RBI as Alberta had nine hits in the ballgame. Catherine Labelle, Sena Catterall and Sophy Gagné had two hits apiece for Québec.
