2009 National Championships: Junior Championship kicks off

OTTAWA – On day two of the Baseball Canada National Championships, the Junior Championship got underway in Trois-Rivières, Québec with a solid pitching performance from three Manitoba pitchers in a 3-0 win over Saskatchewan in the tournament opener.

Jon Przybyl (Stoney Mountain, MB), Elliott Desilets (Elie, MB) and Jean-Michel Habeck (Winnipeg, MB) combined to shutout Saskatchewan, holding them to four hits in the game. Desilets struck out two in his perfect inning of relief.

In other action, Ontario (Windsor) put the game away in the top of the seventh by putting up a four spot and coming away with a 6-2 win over Nova Scotia.

Cameron Goddard (Windsor, ON) hit a bases loaded single in the frame to drive in two runs. James Drew (Windsor, ON) also had an RBI single in the inning.

Justin Cook (Dresden, ON) got the complete game victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Shain Beaudreau (Cole Harbour, NS) took the loss in what was a solid performance thru six innings until things unravelled in the seventh.

Also in early action in Trois-Rivières, New Brunswick held on to a tightly contested 3-2 win over Newfoundland.

At the Baseball Canada Cup in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 3-2 win over Manitoba.

David McIntyre (Bedford, NS) got the win by throwing a complete game and allowing two unearned runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Ryan Johnson (Winnipeg, MB) took the loss, throwing the complete game as well, allowing three runs on six hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

Manitoba opened the scoring in the fourth when Johnson helped his own cause with an RBI single to score Brett Hiebert (Steinbach, MB) and take the 1-0 lead.

But Nova Scotia bounced back in the sixth. After tying the game at one, Alex Ostrov (Timberlea, NS) hit a two-run double to bring in the go-ahead and insurance run and put his team up by a score of 3-1.

Manitoba would climb to within one in the bottom of the seventh, but it would be as close as they would get.

Elsewhere, Saskatchwan bookended their game with Newfoundland with big innings, scoring three in the first and five in the seventh on route to a 10-2 drubbing.

Brady Guimond (Saskatoon, SK) got things going in the first with a two-run double and never looked back. Guimond would finish the game 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Josh Jelinski (Avonlea, SK) had a two-run double in the seventh. He was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

In other action, Alberta defeated Prince Edward Island by a score of 5-1, and British Columbia remained undefeated so far in the tournament with a 11-4 win over New Brunswick.
