2009 National Championships: playoff picture set

OTTAWA – The playoff matchups are now set as we head into championship Sunday at the Baseball Canada Cup and the Junior National Championship.

Alberta put up three runs in the first inning and that was more than enough for Cashton Deleeuw (Westlock, AB) who threw a complete game two-hitter as Alberta claimed first place in Group B at the Baseball Canada Cup with a 6-1 win over Newfoundland.

Alberta will now face British Columbia in the first semi-final. In the other semi-final it will be Ontario and Québec, the latter earning their spot with an 8-3 win over Nova Scotia in the quarter-final tonight.

Québec put up a five spot in the fifth inning highlighted by a three-run double by Jonathan Jones (Lorraine, QC) to put the game away.

In Trois-Rivières, the host team and Ontario (Mississauga) were in a showdown to earn a spot in the semi-finals, and Trois-Rivières came out on top thanks in large part to the pitching performance of Mathieu Bernard (Saguenay, QC), who allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts in a complete game victory by a score of 7-2.

Trois-Rivières will now face Ontario (Windsor) in the first semi-final. The second semi-final will feature Québec and British Columbia. B.C. finished the round-robin portion undefeated after their 12-1 win over Saskatchewan.

B.C. put up nine runs in the third inning which put away Saskatchewan early on route to the mercy rule win. Grant Malm (Coquitlam, BC) went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the game.
