August 15, 2013

Ottawa, Ontario – The game of baseball greeted residents of Trois-Riviéres, Québec, and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia this morning as the 18U (Midget) and 21U (Junior) championships got underway.  A total of eight games were played to get the day started.

18U (Midget) Championships

New Brunswick  5  Prince Edward Island  0

Nick Leggatt (Chatham, NB) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a single that scored Blake Gallagher (Waasis, NB) to pace his team to a 5-0 victory over Prince Edward Island.  Forrest Tobias (Saint John, NB) pitched into the sixth inning striking out four in the process.  Denver Mackenzie (Georgetown, PE) had two hits, including a double, for his squad.

Alberta  6   Ontario  2

A two-run top of the first put Alberta on top early and they never looked back en route to earning the win in their first game.  Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) reached base in all four of his plate appearances and Isagha Eagletail (Calgary, AB) had two RBI to lead the offense.  Vincent Caschara (Sarnia, ON) provided all the offense for his team, scoring both runs.

Saskatchewan  13   Newfoundland and Labrador  3

Game report currently unavailable.

Trois-Riviéres  12   British Columbia  0

If the host team was looking to make a good first impression, they certainly did that by crushing British Columbia 12-0.  They used two five-run innings in the fourth and sixth to officially put the game out of reach.  Raphaël Gladu and Simon Loranger both went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two RBI.

Manitoba  7   Nova Scotia  4

It came down to the last inning, but the Manitoba bats finally awoke to catapult them to an eventual 7-4 victory.  Zach Campbell’s (Winnipeg, MB) two-run double scored the first two runs before another two runs were piled on.  Wes Harding (Liverpool, NS) had two hits and a run scored to lead the Nova Scotia offense.

21U (Junior) Championships

Ontario  4   New Brunswick  1

Joel Pierce (Windsor, ON) got his team started on the right foot by throwing four innings of one-hit ball while Eric Cunningham (Lasalle, ON) and Casey Power (Belle River) supplied all the offence needed to get past New Brunswick.  Both players hit two-run home runs to seal the win.

Québec  10   Newfoundland and Labrador  1

Leading 3-1 heading in to the top of the fifth inning, Québec would score another five runs to put the game out of reach and defeat Newfoundland and Labrador.  Simon Brisebois (Mascouche, QC), Alex Clavet (St. Nicolas, QC), and Francois Tanguay (St. Augustin, QC) each drove in two runs while Jonathan Vivier (Shannon, QC) threw six innings on the mound to earn the victory.

PEI  8   Saskatchewan  6

Saskatchewan scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as PEI held on for a close 8-6 win.  Josh Kelly (Charlottetown, PE) helped kick start the offense by grabbing two hits and scoring three runs while Dylan McKenna (Cornwall, PE) had two RBI.  Leadoff hitter Travis David (Martensville, SK) sparked his team’s offense with three hits and three RBI.
