2023 13U National Western ChampionshipsAug 17-20 Fort McMurray, Alberta(Fort McMurray, AB, August 21, 2023) – The 2023 Baseball Canada 18U National Championship and 13U National Western Championship presented by Diversified Transportation Ltd. have come to a close with both tournaments ending with medal games on Sunday, August 20.
From August 17-20, residents of the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region had the opportunity to enjoy elite level 13U and 18U baseball action, with ten teams from across the country participating in the 18U National Championship presented by Diversified Transportation Ltd and eight teams from Western Canada participating in the 13U National Western Championship presented by Diversified Transportation Ltd.
“Championships like this past week would not be possible without the local organizing committee; and once again Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, including the amazing community volunteers, showed all of Canada it can host a great Championship week. Congratulations to all teams, especially the medalists, on playing great baseball throughout the entire 49 game schedule across four fields,’” said Kelsey McIntosh, Baseball Canada Director of National Programs/Directeur des Programmes Nationaux. “Baseball Canada looks forward to bringing the Baseball Canada Cup back to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo in August 2024, when all ten Provinces will again compete to be the best in Canada!”
In the end it was Team Ontario (Mississauga Tigers HPP), taking home the gold medal in the 18U National Championship, with Team Alberta 1 (Calgary Cardinals) capturing the gold in the 13U division. In the 18U Championship, Team New Brunswick, (Fredericton Royals) finished with a silver medal, while Team Quebec took home the bronze. In the 13U National Western Championship, Team Saskatchewan 1 (Sask Five Giants), captured the silver medal with Team British Columbia (Kelowna Sun Devils) taking home the bronze medal.
“It was an exciting weekend of baseball in our community,” said Jodie Cooper, 2023 Baseball Canada 18U National Championship and 13U National Western Championship presented by Diversified Transportation Ltd Organizing Committee Co-Chair and Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) Director of Sport and Recreation. “We want to thank Baseball Canada for once again selecting our region to host these tournaments, and we want to genuinely express both our congratulations and our thanks to all the event participants, volunteers, baseball fans, and community supporters.”
The 2023 Baseball Canada 18U National Championship and 13U National Western Championship presented by Diversified Transportation Ltd. activated the baseball diamonds at Legacy Dodge Field and Bob Campbell Field at Shell Place, the Ross Hennigar Ball Park in Thickwood, and the Howard Pew Baseball Diamond in Waterways. The tournament was delivered through a partnership between the Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Association (FMMBA) and the RRC.
