Netherlands Bring Bats Against Juniors

St. Petersburg, Florida-The Junior National Team were out-hit by the Netherlands eleven to two as they lost the finale of the spring training trip 8-0.

The Netherlands got to JNT starter Michael Foster (Pickering, ON) in the 1st inning when a single, double and walk followed by another single led to three runs being scored.

Things didn’t fare much better for Foster in the 2nd inning as he allowed another run on an RBI double and quickly the JNT found themselves in a big hole. Foster was relieved by Jake Hansen (Fort Macleod, AB) who was able to limit the damage.

Offensively, the JNT was baffled by Netherlands pitching through the first six innings until Zack Sardellitti (Maple, ON) looped a single into centre field to break the no-hitter.

Michael Clouthier (Guelph, ON) made his first appearance since pitching in the win over the Seoul Nexen Heroes and looked good early on. Clouthier did allow a run in the 4th but was able to strikeout three batters during his outing which included a scoreless 3rd inning.

The strong pitching continued in the 5th when Logan Seifrit took the mound and was dominant through two innings pitched. After allowing the first batter he faced to single, Seifrit retired six batters straight which included four strikeouts.

Sardellitti’s single in the 6th with two outs to break the no-hit bid was quickly erased when Joey Hawkins (Whitby, ON) flied-out to end the frame.

Walks haunted Roberto Suppa (Palgrave, ON) who started the 7th inning on the mound as he gave up two runs on one hit and two walks before striking out the side to end the inning making the score 8-0.

Brandon Collins (Toronto, ON) looked to get things going for his team in the bottom of the 7th when he led off the inning with a single. Collins was quickly forced out at second base and any hopes of the JNT breaking the goose egg looked dim.

Matt Trimble (Coquitlam, BC) and Tanner Spencer (Craik, SK) threw scoreless 8th and 9th innings respectively and the JNT’s bats continued to be silenced as the Netherlands cruised to a shutout victory.
