Juniors split doubleheader

Texas Rangers – 7 JNT - 2

In Boca Chica, the Junior National Team committed seven errors as they fell to the Texas Rangers prospects 7-2 as the Dominican Summer League camp continued.

The game did not start well for the JNT or starting pitcher Jesen Dygestile-Therrien (Montréal, QC) as the Rangers scored three times in the 1st inning. Two errors and three singles led to the runs being scored as the Rangers jumped out to an early lead.

Things did not get any better for Therrien and the JNT in 2nd inning as two errors, two walks and a single plated two more Rangers runs.

Adam Anderson (Georgetown, ON) took the mound in the 4th for his second appearance of camp and cooled the Rangers bats in the inning while picking up one strikeout.

In the 5th, Anderson walked the lead-off batter who then advanced to second base on an error and took third on an additional error before scoring on a wild-pitch.

Anderson would throw a scoreless 6th before an RBI double in the 7th scored a runner from first and gave the Rangers their seventh run of the ballgame.

In the top half of the 7th, the Juniors broke the shutout bid when Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON) hit an RBI groundout that scored Brendan Hendriks (Cochrane, AB) from third base. Hendriks had doubled to lead-off the inning.

Thanks two four consecutive singles in the 8th, the Juniors scored another run, but left the bases loaded before doing anymore damage. Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) had an RBI single that scored Jerod Bartnik (Surrey, BC).

Logan Seifrit (Spruce Grove, AB) tossed a scoreless 8th inning and struck out two Rangers while giving up one hit.

The Juniors were able to keep up with the Rangers with the bats as they collected nine hits to the Rangers ten, but were unable to cash in any runners as they left ten on base.

Dustin Houle (Penticton, BC) and Brandon Collins (Toronto, ON) led the JNT with two hits apiece.

JNT – 5 MLB Supreme Tournament – 2

At Santo Domingo, Gareth Morgan’s double with two out in the top of the 9th gave the Junior National Team a two run lead as they went on to defeat MLB Supreme Tournament of the Dominican Republic 5-2.

Down 2-1 in the 9th, the Juniors scored four runs to give themselves a three-run cushion. With one out and the score tied, Brendan Hendriks singled, Cory Scammell (Edmonton, AB) walked and after a strikeout Morgan came to the plate and delivered with two out. Jerod Bartnik then singled home Morgan from second base for an insurance run.

Supreme Tournament had scored a run in both the 2nd and 3rd innings off JNT starter Skylar Janisse (Maidstone, ON). Their run in the 2nd came with one out and a runner on second base who scored on a double. The run in the 3rd came on a double steal with runners on first and third where the runner on first was tagged out for the third out, but not before the runner from third had crossed home plate.

Janisse went 4 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three batters.

With two out in the 6th and Kyle Hann (Oakville, ON) on second base, Justin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) tripled to score Hann and get the JNT on the board.

Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, ON) took over on the mound in the 5th and turned in a dominant performance as he gave up only three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters to keep Supreme Tournament off the scoreboard.

After the Juniors took the lead in the 9th, Supreme Tournament put two runners on base in their final at bat on a walk and single, but Kellogg was able to shut things down to preserve the victory.
