National Championships: Qu

NORTH YORK- It was a battle between Québec and Ontario in both the Bantam Girls and the Senior Women’s Invitational gold medal games and each province came away with a win. At the Senior Women’s event Québec capped an undefeated tournament with a 7-3 victory over Ontario in the gold medal game, while in the Bantam Girls championships game it was Ontario beating previously unbeaten Québec by a score of 11-8.

Bantam Girls

Ontario 11 Québec 8 (Gold Medal)

Ontario broke the game wide-open in the 7th with 10 runs and held off a late surge from Québec to win 11-8 and give them the gold medal. With the score tied 1-1 in the 7th, Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh, ON) hit a double to score 2 runs to put her team in front by 2. With the score now 5-1, Brinley McLaren’s (Brantford, ON) brought in 2 more runs with a single and later, Mikaela Kehoe’s (Amherstburg, ON) double scored 2 more to give Ontario a 11-1 lead. Québec was quick to respond with 7 runs in the 7th but it was not enough as Ontario held on for the win. Daphnée Gelinas (Legardeur, QC) highlighted the 7 run inning with a triple that scored 2 runs and later came around to score. McLaren earned the win on the mound and McKyla Brasil (Mississauga, ON) recorded the save. Québec’s Sabrina Périard (Gatineau, QC) had 6 strikeouts in 5 innings pitched.

Nova Scotia 10 Alberta 0 (Bronze Medal)

Amelie Savoie (Tracadie-Sheila, NB) fashioned a 2-hitter and struck out 9 as Nova Scotia rolled to a 10-0 win over Alberta to claim the bronze medal. Offensive stars for Nova Scotia were Jenna Jackson (Steam Mill, NS) and Maria Roy (Hammond’s Plains, NS) who each collected 3 hits, while Jackson had 3 RBI’s and Roy contributed 1 RBI. Nova Scotia had 13 hits and scored 2 runs in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd, and 3 more in the 6th for the win.

Earlier in the day, Ontario advanced to the gold medal game with a 15-0 defeat of Nova Scotia, while Alberta got by Ontario 2 by a score of 14-11 to reach the bronze medal match-up.

Senior Women’s Invitational

Québec 7 Ontario 3 (Gold Medal)

Jessica Bérubé (Québec, QC) threw a complete game and struck out 9 Ontario batters as Québec took home the gold medal with a 7-3 win. After Ontario took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st, Québec responded with 3 runs in both the 1st and 2nd inning to take a 6-2 lead. Bérubé helped her own cause in the 2nd with a run scoring triple. Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) capped a strong tournament at the plate for Ontario as she accounted for both Ontario runs in the 1st inning after she hit a double. Québec’s gold medal victory gave them a perfect 6-0 record in the tournament.

Alberta 13 BC 3 (Bronze Medal)

Alberta brought their bats to the bronze medal game as they smashed-out 17 hits and beat BC 13-3. Nicole Luchanksi (Edmonton, AB), Meagan Cornelssen (Grand Prairie, AB), Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) and Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) each had 3 hits while Heidi Northcott (Edmonton, AB) earned the victory on the mound after pitching 4 strong innings.

Earlier in the day, Ontario 2 beat Nova Scotia 12-6 to claim 5th place.
