Canadians look to make mark in MLB postseason

OTTAWA-As many as five Canadians will be participating MLB Postseason play which begins on Friday to determine a World Series winner.

The list is headlined by New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin (Chelsea, QC) and Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford (Port Dover, ON). Both players enjoyed solid season playing on their respective division winning teams. Martin, an Al All-Star, slugged 18 homers to go along with 65 RBI while Axford recorded an impressive 46 saves in 48 opportunities.

Also eligible for postseason play are Axford’s teammates with the Brewers George Kottaras (Toronto, ON) and Taylor Green (Comox, BC) while Pete Orr (Newmarket, ON) is a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

In 2010, Orr and Green were members of the Canadian team that qualified for the 2011 IBAF World Cup and Pan Am Games which are set to begin next month.

Dave McKay (Vancouver, BC) a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame is the First Base Coach with the St. Louis Cardinals while Ron Thomason (Sarnia, ON) assumes the Third Base Coach duties with the New York Yankees.

General Manager Doug Melvin (Chatham, ON) and Assistant GM, Gord Ash (Toronto, ON) head-up the front office of the National League Central Division winners, the Milwaukee Brewers.
