OTTAWA – After four days of competition at the ongoing Baseball Canada Championships that started last Thursday, five teams will be going home with gold medals. Below are the five National Championships that came to a close on Sunday.
13U National Western
Coquitlam-Moody won gold at the 13U National Western topping Burnaby by a score of 2-0. South Jasper Place earned bronze by defeating Oildome 13-9. Here’s a quick recap of those two games:
South Jasper Place (AB1) 13 Oildome (MB2) 9 – Cole Huebner (Edmonton, AB) crossed the plate three times in South Jasper Place’s win. Josh Gerhardt (Edmonton, AB) earned the win allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks over 4 innings while striking out 5
Coquitlam-Moody 2 Burnaby 0 – Carlin Dick (Abbotsford, BC) went 6.2 innings on the mound shutting out the opposition and allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk in the game. Dick struck out 10 of 25 batters to earn the win. Kai Sands (Coquitlam, BC) picked up a hit and scored once in the close game.
16U Girls Invitational
Québec 1 earned gold on home soil defeating Ontario by a score of 7-4. Alberta outscored Manitoba 12-8 to earn bronze. Both semi-final games and two placement games took place on Sunday as well. Here is a recap of the day in Saguenay, QC:
Québec (QC1) 10 Manitoba 0 – Starting pitcher Pascale Jalbert (St-Honore, QC) tossed a complete game allowing only 3 hits over 5 innings to shut out Manitoba and earn Québec a spot in the finals. Marie-Pier Crete (Rigaud, QC) went 4 for 4 in the contest.
Québec (QC2) 9 Newfoundland 7 – Marianne Gallagher (Montréal, QC) went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs in Québec’s win over Newfoundland to finish 7th in the final standings. Noah Carrier (Sain-Jean-Chrysostome, QC) earned the win allowing 3 runs over 2.1 innings.
Ontario 8 Alberta 3 – Mia Valcke (St. Marys, ON) went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to give Ontario a spot on the finals against QC1. Starting pitcher Caitlin Tomotsugu (Vaughan, ON) earned the win allowing 3 runs over 6.1 innings on the mound.
Nova Scotia 11 British Columbia 7 – Maria Roy (Hammonds Plains, NS) went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs in her impressive performance at the plate to help Nova Scotia finish 5th in the final standings. Roy also earned the win as starting pitcher for her team lasting 6 innings on the mound.
Alberta 12 Manitoba 8 – Hayley Lalor (Red Deer, AB) went 3 for 5 with 2 triples and drove in 3 runs to lead Alberta’s offense and help the team capture bronze. Starting pitcher Meagan Cameron (Rimbey, AB) earned the win allowing only 1 run on 4 hits over 3 innings on the mound.
Québec (QC1) 7 Ontario 4 – Québec came back from a 4-1 deficit scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take the lead. Erica Ahad (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC) earned the win for her team allowing only 2 runs over 6.2 innings. Bridget Kelly (St-Leonard, QC) and Pascale Jalbert (St-Honore, QC) both drove in 2 runs to help Québec to gold.
18U Championship
Québec earned gold at the 18U Championship by defeating British Columbia 6-1 on home soil. New Brunswick earned bronze defeating Manitoba 4-0. Both semi-final games and three placement games were also held on Sunday. Here’s a recap of the action:
Ontario 2 PEI 1 – Travis Keys (London, ON) helped Ontario clinch 7th with the win over PEI. Keys allowed only 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 6 over 6 innings. Jacob Mansfield (London, ON) went 3 for 3 with a double and came across to score once to help the offense.
Saskatchewan 11 Nova Scotia 3 – Saskatchewan clinched 9th place in the final standings with the win over Nova Scotia. Bryden Gore (Saskatoon, SK) led the offense going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and driving in 3 runs while Daniel Berg (Saskatoon, SK) earned the win on the mound tossing a complete 7 innings.
Québec (QC1) 10 New Brunswick 0 – Québec earned a spot in the finals thanks to Hugo Brochu (Montréal, QC) who shut out the opposition over 5 innings allowing only 1 hit. Anthony Quirion (Coaticook, QC) went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs to lead the offense.
Ailes du Québec (QC2) 5 Alberta 1 – The Ailes clinched the 5th spot in the final standings with the win over Alberta. Samuel Tardif (St-Amable, QC) earned the win allowing only 1 run on 3 hits over 5 innings on the mound. Samuel Cyr (Montréal, QC) went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs to lead the team’s offensive production.
British Columbia 10 Manitoba 0 – British Columbia won the second semi-final of the day thanks to an impressive performance on the mound by Cole Ensing (North Vancouver, BC). Ensing shut out the opposition over 5 innings allowing only 3 hits while striking out 4. Nicholas Favaro (Burnaby, BC) led the offense going 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBIs in the game.
New Brunswick 4 Manitoba 0 – New Brunswick’s Zach Newman (Miramichi, NB) shut out Manitoba over a complete 7 innings to win bronze. Newman allowed 5 hits in the contest while Jeremie Arseneau (Dieppe, NB) and Declan Buckle (Dieppe, NB) both went 2 for 4 in the game.
Québec 6 British Columbia 1 – Québec won gold in the final game with a 6-1 win over BC thanks to a solid performance by Vincent Ruel (Québec, QC) on the mound. Ruel allowed only 1 run on 5 hits over 6 innings while striking out 7. Cedrick Pellerin (Gatineau, QC) led the offense going 2 for 2 with a double and 3 RBIs.
21U Championship
Québec won gold in Regina, SK at the 21U Championship defeating Ontario 1 by a score of 10-7. Ontario 2 took bronze with their 6-1 win over Kamloops. Both semi-final games were also played earlier in the day. Here’s a recap:
Québec 10 Kamloops (BC2) 3 – Québec earned a spot in the finals with their win over Kamloops thanks to a huge showing at the plate by Ismael Ballard (Trois-Rivières, QC). Ballard went 2 for 4 with a 2-RBI double and a 3-run home run in the win. Alex Clavet (Levis, QC) earned the win allowing 3 runs over 5 innings on the mound.
Ontario (ON1) 7 Ontario (ON2) 2 – Ontario 1 topped Ontario 2 in the battle of Ontario for a shot at gold later in the day. Shane Courney (Windsor, ON) pitched a complete game allowing only 2 runs over 7 innings while striking out 6. Chris Horwood (Tecumseh, ON) led the offense going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
Ontario (ON2) 6 Kamloops (BC2) 1 – Ontario earned bronze thanks to 5 shutout innings from their starter Matthew Smith (London, ON). Smith earned the win allowing only 5 hits in the game while striking out 4. Nolan Anderson (London, ON) went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI in the win.
Québec 10 Ontario (ON1) 7 – Québec won gold with a huge 10-7 win over Ontario in the final game of the tournament. Claude Ortiz (Montréal, QC) earned the win allowing 5 runs over 6 innings while striking out 6. Alex Clavet came through with a huge clutch performance at the plate driving in 6 of his team’s runs going 2 for 3 with a triple and a double.
Senior Women Invitational
Ontario 1 took gold in Saguenay, QC with a 3-1 win over Québec 1. British Columbia won bronze in the only other game of the day at the tournament with an 8-2 win over Ontario 2. Here’s a quick recap of those game:
British Columbia 8 Ontario (ON2) 2 - Heather Healey’s (Paradise, NL) 1 hitter over 7 innings led Ontario 2 to bronze. Healey struck out 4 in her performance on the mound. Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) picked up 2 RBIs in the win to help to offense.
Ontario (ON1) 3 Québec (QC1) 1 – Autumn Mills (Toronto, ON) tossed a complete game allowing only 1 run on 3 hits during her time on the mound to help Ontario to gold. Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and a double that proved to be the difference in the game.
Up Next: The 13U National, 15U Boys and Senior Men events get started on Thursday and are scheduled to conclude on Sunday with more gold medals to be handed out.
