SHERBROOKE, QC-Colton Wood (Victoria, BC) fired a one-hit, complete game shutout to lead British Columbia to a 5-0 win over Ontario and a gold medal at the Canada Games.
Wood struck out ten batters and didn’t allow an Ontario hit after giving up a single with one out in the top of the first inning.
BC did all the scoring they would need in the home half of the first when they took advantage of three Ontario errors to score five runs which was more than enough for Wood to work with.
BC put runners on second and third after two singles and a fielder’s choice which led to Justin Lawrence (Surrey, BC) scoring the first run of the game after an error at third base.
With the score 3-0 and runners on second and third and two out, the third Ontario error of the inning scored both runs to put BC up by five.
Wood took control from there on out allowing only two runners the rest of the way coming on a hit batter in the fourth and an error in the sixth.
Although not figuring in the scoring, BC’s Jesse Mycock (Victoria, BC) was 2-for-3 with a single and double.
Colin Robinson (Windsor, ON) had the lone hit for Ontario
Alberta 7 New Brunswick 0
After a lengthy rain delay, Alberta scored a run in the top of the third and Michael Soroka (Calgary, AB) tossed five shutout innings as Alberta defeated New Brunswick 7-0 to win the bronze medal.
Soroka only allowed two hits and walk, while fanning six.
After a one-out walk and ground-out, Matthew Lloyd’s double in the third scored Owen Bessette (Sherwood Park, AB) to give Alberta a 1-0 lead.
Dane Tofteland (Okotoks, AB) had a two-run single in the sixth and Alberta put the game out of reach in the seventh with a four run outburst to go up by seven.
Nolan Bumstead (Calgary, AB) scored two runs and had a single and double, while Alex Bishop (Calgary, AB0 drove in two in the seventh with an RBI single.
Québec 3 Saskatchewan 2
Alexis Lavergne (Gatineau, QC) went the distance striking out three and allowing only two runs on six hits and two walks as Québec claimed fifth place with a 3-2 win over Saskatchewan. Québec opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Charles Leblanc (Laval, QC) cashed in Antoine Léonard (Trois-Riviéres, QC) with an RBI double. After Québec went up by a pair on a sac-fly from Oscar Rodriguez (Montréal, QC), Saskatchewan tied the score in the fourth on an RBI single from Brayden Resch (Saskatoon, SK) and a sac-fly from Kade Erickson (Regina, SK). Léonard scored the go ahead run in the fifth on a fielder’s choice which proved to be the difference. Léonard had three hits for Québec, while Saskatchewan’s Jager Toffan (Regina, SK) had two.
