Canada defeats Australia in Game 1 of the Women’s World Cup

Caracas, Venezuela-A five run fifth inning was enough for Canada to earn their first win at the IV Women’s World Cup in Caracas, Venezuela. Autumn Mills (London, ON) came in relief for Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) in the 4th inning to pick up the win for Canada. Offensively, Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Becky Hartley (White Rock, BC) with 2 runs scored and Stephanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) went 1 for 2, with a double and an RBI to pace Canada offensively.

“I am very satisfied with the collective effort during today’s game,” says Field Manager André Lachance (Ottawa, ON). “Although the field was not in really good condition, the players were able to focus on what had to be accomplished. Defensively, we were solid behind our pitchers. This is an important win for us as it gives us the momentum for tomorrow’s game against Chinese Taipei.”

Notes: Canada will send Melissa Armstrong (Saskatoon, SK) to the mound on August 13th against Chinese Taipei, with the first pitch scheduled for 10:30am ET in Caracas.
