Get to know your PSO: Newfoundland and Labrador

“Get to know your PSO (Provincial Sport Office)” is a new feature on baseball.ca that will provide an informative look at each of the ten Provincial Baseball Organizations throughout Canada. The 2014 baseball season has already begun for some provinces, while others are still counting down the days until they can get on the field. Either way, baseball season is upon us so let’s take a closer look at the organizations that help bring baseball to communities across our country!

National Championship highlight: Winning the 1966 Junior National Championship at home at St. Pat's Ball Park in St. John's. NL with a 4-3 win over Ontario in final.

Most notable baseball player(s) to come out of province: Frank Humber - Pitched for Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea. Drafted and played in Los Angeles Dodgers farm system.
Famous non-baseball alumni: A.J. "Ank" Murphy - St. John's native was the first President of Provincial Baseball and later elected as Provincial Government Member before becoming a Minister with the provincial government.
Bill Halfyard - St. John's native served as President of the Provincial Association and was also elected and served as President of Baseball Canada.

What to watch for in 2014:

2014 Senior National Championship in St. John's

One the most popular National Championship events put on each summer, the Senior Nationals will take place in St. John’s from August 21-25.

Coach/Umpire Development

Baseball Newfoundland has placed a focus on coach education and specifically on increasing the amount of coaches involved with national and provincial teams.

On the officials end, Baseball Newfoundland hosted an Umpires Super Clinic in early May.

Girls Baseball and Challenger Program

Steps are also being taken by the provincial office to increase the amount of girl’s players throughout Newfoundland.

Challenger Baseball will be coming to Newfoundland in 2014 with two local associations looking to implement the program for children with cognitive or physical disabilities.
