MATANZAS, Cuba-The Junior National Team and Cuba managed to get four and one third innings of baseball in today before heavy rain caused the remainder of the game to be postponed.
The game is scheduled to resume tomorrow at 3pm EST with a seven inning contest to follow at Victoria de Giron Stadium.
Cuba held a 2 -1 lead and had a runner on second base with one out in the top of the fifth when the rain started.
With the Junior National Team looking to pick up their first win of the Cuba Summer Series, they received four solid innings on the mound from starter Colton Wood (Victoria, BC)
After a shaky start that saw Wood walk the first two batters of the game only to see them both score on a double to right field and error, he settled in and benefited from some sound defence to keep Cuba from adding to their lead.
In the fourth, after surrendering a lead-off double, second baseman LP Pelletier (Montréal, QC) made a heads up play on a ground ball firing to third base to get the runner who had veered too far off the bag looking to score.
Wood then got a fly-out and fielder’s choice to get out of the inning. He came back out for the fifth and gave-up a lead-off single before fielding a sacrifice bunt and getting the runner at first for the first out of the inning before the rain started.
Wood added three strikeouts to his line that saw him allow one earned run and give up two hits and two walks.
Offensively, the juniors were in the game scoring one run in the bottom of the first on a Mitch Robinson (Surrey, BC) RBI single, and loading the bases on three separate occasions only to fail to cash any more runs in.
The juniors were able to take advantage of five walks and six hits including a bunt single from Pelletier and base-hits from Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON), Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON), Robert Byckowski (Georgetown, ON) and Darren Shred (Brampton, ON).
Up Next: RHP Matt Ianni (Ottawa, ON) is scheduled to start on the mound when play resumes tomorrow, while Alexis Lavergne (Gatineau, QC) is scheduled to start the second game…Live game tweets from all Cuba Summer Series games will be available via Baseball Canada’s Twitter account, @baseballcanada.
