National Championships: August 20th Wrap

OTTAWA- Brad Clarke (Cloverdale, BC) singled in the bottom of the 9th give BC a 1-0 walk-off victory over Alberta at the Midget championship in London, Ontario. J.J. D’aoust (Penticton, BC) scored the winning run after he had walked, advanced to 2nd on a ground out and stole 3rd base. To that point, the game had been a pitcher’s duel between Alberta’s Alex Regan (Calgary, AB) who pitched the entire game and only gave up 2 hits while striking out 11 and BC’s Tanner Collins (Penticton, BC) who went 7 innings and struck out 8 batters. Neither pitcher allowed a runner past 2nd base the entire game to prolong the scoreless battle. In the end BC’s Matt Pouncey (Kamloops, BC) was credited with the win as he pitched a perfect 9th inning.

Earlier in the day BC defeated Québec (1) on the strength of Patrick Bigelow’s (Maple Ridge, BC) 2 for 4 afternoon which saw him score a run and have 2 RBI.

Québec (2) was too much for New Brunswick as they rolled to a 13-0 mercy-rule win. Derek Legault (Mascouche, QC) and Jean- Félix Proulx (Nicolet, QC) each had 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Junior

In a 15 inning marathon game Scott Lee (Cole Harbour, NS) was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the 15th with the bases loaded to give Nova Scotia a 4-3 win over Saskatchewan. Matthew Oliver (Reserve Mines, NS) led the inning off with a walk and advanced to 2nd on a Jonny MacLeod (Sydney Mines, NS) single. After Shain Beaudreau (Cole Harbour, NS) successfully laid down a sac bunt to advanced the runners, Jonathan Boutilier (Glace Bay, NS) was intentionally walked which loaded the bases only to see Lee hit by a pitch to bring in the winning run. Nova Scotia had lost a 3-0 lead earlier in the game as Saskatchewan came back to tie the game and force extra’s. Saskatchewan’s Logan Calanchie (Yorkton, SK) threw an incredible 12 innings and only gave up 6 hits. Beaudreau was credited with the win for Nova Scotia as he entered the game in the 13th inning and preserved the tie.

Québec’s William Sebastian (Gatineau, QC) pitched 6 innings of relief as Québec hung on to beat Manitoba 3-1. Sebastian struck out 5 on the evening.

Tristan Beadle (Ajax, ON) earned the save as Ontario hung on the edge Trois-Riviéres 4-3 in game that finished after 12am ET.

Peewee Western

Morgan Geekie (Strathclair, MB) was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored as his Mid West team romped over Regina 16-6. Brett Resch (Saskatoon, SK) collected 2 hits and had an RBI in a losing cause. Mid West scored in all innings but one as they marched to a mercy rule win.

Luxor Glor (Winnipeg, MB) went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Christian Peters (Winnipeg, MB) and Connor Bowey (Winnipeg, MB) had one hit and scored two runs each as Winnipeg South got by Edmonton 7-4. Kurt Meeberg (Edmonton, AB) had a 2-run homerun.

Jordan Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing zero runs, 1 Hit and struck out 6 as Abbotsford edged the Saskatoon Braves 2-1.

James Shearer (Brandon, MB) was 3 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored and Tanner Kaspick (Brandon, MB) went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI as host Brandon beat Ridge Meadows 5-3. Nick LaFlamme (Cloverdale, BC) went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
