NOTEBOOK: JNT Fall Instructional Camp

The Junior National Team program is in Dunedin, Florida at TD Ballpark (the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays) from October 14-23 for the annual Fall Instructional Camp

Thirty-four athletes will be participating in daily practices and intrasquad games with a doubleheader also scheduled against Stetson University on October 19th.

OCT. 23 | Canada RED 6, Canada GREY 6

Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) belted a pair of home runs including a game-tying, two run shot in the top of the ninth as Canada Red earned a 6-6 tie with Canada Grey on the final day of the Fall Instructional League Camp.

With his Red side leading by two in the third, Poturnak smacked a 3-2 offering over the centerfield wall for his first homer of the game while his ninth inning long ball also left the yard in centre.

Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, NS) and Matt Evans (Tillsonburg, ON) had two hit days for Red while Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) and Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON) had two hits apiece for Grey with Hamilton driving in three runs.

Zak Szabo (Whitby, ON) turned in a strong effort on the mound for Red tossing five innings of one run ball with seven strikeouts.

OCT. 22 | Canada RED 11, Canada GREY 2

Rees Kozar (Amhertburg, ON) belted a fifth inning, three-run homer to lead a 12-hit attack for Canada Red as they went on to defeat Canada Grey, 11-2.

The Red offence was firing on all cylinders with several players making an impact at the plate including Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) who smacked a pair of doubles and a triple while Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) collected three hits and drove in two runs.

Red also received a pair solid pitching performances with Jérémy Pilon (Valleyfield, QC) tossing five innings allowing two runs with six strikeouts while Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) threw four scoreless innings holding Grey to just one hit and two walks to go along with five strikeouts.

OCT. 21 | Canada GREY 10, Canada RED 4

Jimmy Dionne (Saint-Augustin de Desmaures, QC) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove in two runs to lead Canada Grey to a 10-4 win over Canada Red.

Both teams had 12 hits apiece with Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON), Jack Wheatley (Calgary, AB), Max Hartman (St. Albert, AB) and Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) collecting two hits each for Grey while Red received three hit efforts from Matt Evans (Tillsonburg, ON) and Rees Kozar (Amherstburg, ON) with Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) going 2-for-5.

Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) was on the mound for four runs although just one of them was earned as he went four innings allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Grey received solid outings from Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (St-Pie, QC) and Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON) who combined to throw nine innings allowing just three earned runs with six strikeouts total.

OCT. 20 | Canada RED 6, Canada GREY 4

A 3-for-3 day at the plate highlighted by a second inning homer from Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, ON) wasn’t enough as his Canada Grey squad fell 6-4 to Canada Red.

After Matt Evans (Tillsonburg, ON) put Red up by one with a two-run single in the second inning, O’Hearn led off the top of third with a solo home run on a fly ball that cleared the right field wall.

Red was quick to respond in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors to score three times including an RBI single off the bat of Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON).

Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, ON) and Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC) combined on the win for Red with Burgess striking out seven over 4.1 innings of work while Marshall allowed just one run and had three strikeouts in four innings on the mound.

Sam White (Aurora, ON) had two hits for Grey including a double in the loss.

OCT. 19 | Stetson University 9, Canada 5

The Junior National Team travelled to DeLand, Florida and Melching Field, the home of Stetson University for a contest against the Hatters. With the Hatters leading by three in the fifth, Canada responded with a pair of runs before the allowing four in the bottom of the inning to eventually fall, 9-5. 

The two-run fifth was highlighted by a Rees Kozar (Amherstburg, ON) RBI triple before Charles-Olivier Cyr (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) knocked in Kozar on a ground out. 

In the ninth, Canada would add three runs with Deiten Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) collecting a RBI single while Cyr and Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) also drove in runs.

Lachance, Ty Hall (Victoria, BC) and Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) had two hits apiece in the contest.

OCT. 18 | Canada RED 7, Canada Grey 5

Rees Kozar’s (Amherstburg, ON) RBI single in the top of the ninth plated the go ahead run, breaking a 5-5 tie as Canada Red went on to a 7-5 win over Canada Grey.

Red added an insurance run later in the inning when Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) scampered home on a passed ball while Zak Szabo (Whitby, ON) retired the side in the bottom of the inning recording one of his three strikeouts on the afternoon.

Trailing by a run in the third, Red struck for three runs getting RBI singles from Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON), Sam White (Aurora, ON) and Max Hartman (St. Albert, AB).

White knocked in his second run of the game with a single in the fifth before Grey mounted a comeback including a two-run seventh inning with a pair of runs scoring on an error off the bat of Kozar.

Szabo took the win on the mound working four innings without allowing an earned run while Red received a strong performance on the mound from Matteo Pare (LaSalle, ON) who allowed just one run over five innings with six strikeouts.

OCT. 17 | Canada RED 5, Canada Grey 5

Sam White (Aurora, ON) hit three doubles and drove in two runs while Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, NS) had two hits and knocked in a pair as Canada Red played Canada Grey to a 5-5 draw.

With Grey leading 3-0 in the fourth, Red struck with back-to-back RBI singles from Doucette and Josh Jones (Blainville, QC) before Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) knotted things up with a sac fly to centerfield.

After Doucette collected his second RBI single of the game in the fifth to give Red a one run lead, Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) doubled in a run in the seventh to give his side a two-run lead.

With two out in the top of the ninth, White lined a pitch to left that plated Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, ON) and Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON) to tie the score.

OCT. 16 | Canada RED 5, Canada Grey 1

Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) fired five scoreless innings while Conor Pote (Sherwood Park, AB) followed with four string innings to lead Canada Red to a 5-1 victory over Canada Grey.

Usselman surrendered just two hits and struck out eight batters and Pote tossed three scoreless innings before allowing a walk and two hits in the bottom of the ninth as Grey erased the shutout bid on a Max Hartman (St. Albert, AB) RBI single.

Red opened the scoring in the top of the first as Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) connected on a RBI single to centre before Josh Jones (Blainville, QC) lifted a sac fly to centre that brought in a tagging Sam Shaw (Victoria, BC).

After Matt Evans (Tillsonburg, ON) drove in a run on a sac fly in the fourth, Red struck for two more runs in the fifth with Shaw singling home Max Hartman before a double steal saw Ty Hall (Victoria, BC) score from third.

Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON) suffered the loss for Red working 4.2 innings before giving way to Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (St-Pie, QC) who didn’t allow a hit over four scoreless innings.

OCT. 15 | Canada GREY 4, Canada RED 2

Liam Adamson (London, ON) struck out seven batters and allowed just one run over five innings of work to propel Canada Grey to a 4-2 win over Canada Red.

Sam White’s (Aurora, ON) triple in the fourth inning gave Grey a 2-1 lead and they went on to add a run in the fifth on a Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, ON) sac fly before Jack Wheatley (Calgary, AB) knocked in a run in the eighth on a single to left field.

Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) tossed 3.2 innings for Grey allowing one run on one hit and three walks.

Red had opened the scoring in the third when Ty Hall (Victoria, BC) smacked a two out double to left to score Max Hartman (St. Albert, AB) while Josh Jones (Blainville, QC) drove in Hall in the sixth on a sac fly to centre.

Chase Marshall (White Rock, BC) and Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, ON) shared pitching duties for Red with Marshall working 4.1 innings with six strikeouts while Burgess allowed one run and fanned four over 3.1 innings of work.
