Baseball Canada is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of St. Louis Cardinals outfielder, Oscar Taveras.
He was killed today in a car accident along with his girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, in the Dominican Republic.
Taveras made his MLB debut in 2014 with the Cardinals and just two weeks ago hit a home run against the San Francisco Giants in game two of the National League Championship Series.
As a teenager, Taveras spent four years in Montréal and played in Baseball Québec’s Midget Triple-A League with Marquis de Montreal before returning to the Dominican Republic. In 2007 he played with Team Quèbec in the Baseball Canada Canada Midget (18U) National Championship held in Quèbec City.
He was widely considered as one of baseball's rising young stars.
Thoughts and prayers are with the Taveras and Arvelo families, and the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
