Quantrill impressive in loss to Nationals

ORLANDO-Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) tossed three shutout innings and only gave-up one hit, but the Washington Nationals prospects produced enough offence to defeat the Junior National Team 5-1.

The juniors outhit the Nationals 12-7 and left eleven runners on base throughout the game including the bases loaded in the 2nd inning.

Their only run of the game came in the 2nd after Morgan Lofstrom (Kelowna, BC), Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) and Jordan Schulz (Strasbourg, SK) hit consecutive singles to load the bases before Nolan Bumstead (Calgary, AB) grounded into a double-play to score Loftsrom.

Quantrill cruised through his three innings of work, facing only ten batters and allowing just one single that came with two out in the top of the second.

The juniors had a chance to add to their lead in third when Jake Lumley (Windsor, ON) singled with one out, but was picked-off at first bases before Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) tripled, which would have cashed him in.

Reliever Travis Seabrooke (Peterborough, ON) took over for Quantrill in the fourth and shut the Nationals down for an inning before they finally got on the board with a two-run fifth.

Seabrooke allowed a walk and a one-out single before a triple scored both runs.

Seabrooke tossed a scoreless sixth and finished his three inning outing allowing two runs on two hits and a walk.

Nathan Borges (Brooklin, ON) took the mound in the seventh and gave-up a leadoff triple that came into score on an error.

After a stolen base and another JNT error, an RBI single brought in the second Nats run of the inning and they led 4-1.

Jordan Schulz picked up his second hit of the game when he tripled in the seventh inning with two out, but was left there after a strikeout.

A sac-fly in the top of the ninth brought in the fifth National run of the game.

O’Neill, Schulz, Orimoloye, Lofstrom and Chris Thibeadeau (Dartmouth, NS) had two hits apiece for the juniors, while Lumley singled and JD Osborne (Whitby, ON) doubled to account for 12 hits.

Notes: The juniors will take on the Houston Astros tomorrow at 1pm ET in Orlando with Adam Jafine (Toronto, ON) expected to start.
