OTTAWA-After upsetting the United States 2-1 to win the gold medal at last year’s Pan Am Games in Mexico and claiming the bronze medal at the IBAF World Cup in Panama, the Senior National Team will receive the ultimate honour on Saturday as they will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys, Ontario.
Other inductees include former Montréal Expo Rusty Staub, former Canadian Olympian and 16-year MLB veteran Rheal Cormier (Moncton, NB) and current General Manager of the Milwaukee Brewers Doug Melvin (Chatham, ON).
On induction day, legendary baseball writer Bob Elliott (Kingston, ON) will take to the microphone at the grounds of the CBHOF to speak about the historic win and introduce team members. Long-time Manager Ernie Whitt, who was inducted into the hall in 2009, will address those in attendance and he will be joined by Coach and Director of Baseball Canada’s National Teams Greg Hamilton (Ottawa, ON), Third Base Coach Tim Leiper, Business Manager and member of the 2009 Hall of Fame class Bernie Soulliere (Windsor, ON), Equipment Manager Keith Sanford (Windsor, ON) and Athletic Therapist Dave Blatz (Winnipeg, MB).
Two members of the of the team, RHP Mike Johnson (Sherwood Park, AB) and OF Brock Kjeldgaard (London, ON), will be on hand to represent the 24-players who provided Canada with its best ever finish at a major international baseball event.
Rod Black from TSN will emcee the induction ceremony on Saturday which will get underway at 11am ET and admission is free!
