Baseball Canada’s alumni stretch all over the baseball and business communities. Recently, Baseball Canada.ca caught up with Mark Randall, former national team pitcher and current national team pitching coach, to get his thoughts on a few matters. BC: What is the most difficult aspect of pitching in baseball?
Randall: Just being consistent. I think that’s something that sets you apart between being an amateur player and a professional – just having an even keel on a regular basis in maintaining a strong pitching game.
BC: Who, in your eyes, is the best manager in the majors?
Randall: I’d have to say Bobby Cox at this point. He’s translated 13 straight seasons into the playoffs. He handles the superstars really well. He’s been very consistent and he’s a proven winner.
BC: What is your fondest Baseball Canada moment?
Randall: The (1999) Pan-Am Games (in Winnipeg). We were playing the Americans in the second game. I’m facing (former roommate) Jon Zuber with the bases loaded and I got out of the inning and ultimately we won the game. It was a significant highlight during the tournament.
BC: What long-term baseball aspirations do you have?
Randall: To become a coach at the professional level. Obviously, I love wearing “Canada” across my chest. But anything I do will hopefully ultimately help me get to the professional level as a coach.
BC: What song would you choose to sing if you were a contestant on either American Idol or Canadian Idol?
Randall: I would choose Back in Black by AC/DC – not because I sound like the band but because it’s an upbeat kind of tune… Either that or a Mariah Carey song (laughing).
Mark Randall is the owner and president of Boulevard Interiors in Edmonton. He also serves as general manager of the Edmonton Big River Prospects of the Western Major Baseball League, a Canadian collegiate wood-bat league. Randall, who played for the national senior team from 1998 to 2001, worked as the national junior team’s pitching coach for two years prior to holding the same position with the national senior team this year.
