Women’s World Cup: Update from Baseball Canada

Ottawa, ON- After the unfortunate incident that saw a member of Hong Kong hit with a stray bullet in the lower leg, the Women’s World Cup will continue in Venezuela. The incident occurred on August 13th in the city of Caracas and all games scheduled for August 14th were suspended, including a game between Canada and Hong Kong. The team from Hong Kong has decided to return home, however the other 10 remaining teams have decided to stay and will continue with the tournament. All tournament games will now take place in the city of Maracay.

“We have been in constant contact with (Canadian) Field Manager and Manger of Baseball Operation’s with Baseball Canada, André Lachance,” said Jim Baba the Director General of Baseball Canada. “Our main concern is with the safety of our players, staff, the (Canadian) umpire we have at the tournament and the Technical Commissioner from Canada. We wanted to make sure that everyone feels comfortable staying in Venezuela for the duration of the tournament. If at any point any one of our team member’s or staff feel uncomfortable, we will make arrangements for them to come home.”
