2009 National Championships: Alberta brings home Senior Men’s gold

OTTAWA – A four run fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie as Alberta went on to capture the Senior Men’s Championship with an 8-4 win over Québec in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Lance Romanchuk (Sherwood Park, AB) led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and moved into scoring position on a Justin Miller (Sherwood Park, AB) single. Romanchuk scored the go-ahead run on a RBI single from Jason Sutherland (Sherwood Park, AB) and Alberta took a 5-4 lead.

From there, things started to fall apart for Québec. John Mailman (Sherwood Park, AB) hit a single to load the bases, then with two outs in the inning Andy Herman (Sherwood Park, AB) drew a walk to drive in another run to make it 6-4. Then two more runs came in on an error from the pitcher to make it 8-4.

Québec was able to erase a 3-0 Alberta lead in the fourth inning when they would put up a four spot in the frame, highlighted by an RBI double form Vincent Guay (Coaticook, QC) to take a 4-3 lead which would be short lived.

In the bronze medal game, Ontario edged Newfoundland in a 1-0 pitcher`s duel to take the bronze. The only run of the game came in the top of the first when Rob Mancini (Windsor, ON) drove in Anthony Dufour (LaSalle, ON) with an RBI double.

One final Baseball Canada National Championship has yet to be decided and that is the inaugural Peewee Atlantic Championship, which is taking place in Moncton, New Brunswick from September 10-13.
