Alberta and Québec go for gold at the Canada Games

CHARLOTTETOWN – Alberta came up with perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament at the Canada Games by upsetting heavily favoured Ontario by a score of 2-0 to reach the gold medal game.

Brad Regehr (Lynden, AB) got things started for Alberta in the top of the second when he hit a solo home run off of Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, ON) to take the 1-0 lead.

It was more than enough for Hayden Chies (Calgary, AB), who allowed four hits and walked three while striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Alberta added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Scott Gerun (Westlock, AB), who had reached on a double, came in to score on an error.

Adam Paulencu (Sherwood Park, AB) pitched the last 2 2/3 innings and allowed only one walk and struck out two to seal the win and send Alberta to the final.

Alberta will now face Québec for gold, as the latter earned their spot in the final with a 4-1 victory over Manitoba in the other semi-final.

Alexandre Villeneuve (St-Jean Chrysostome, QC) was the story in this game as he was outstanding in relief for Québec. After taking a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run error, Villeneuve came in and was lights out retiring all nine batters he faced, including seven by strikeout.

Ontario and Manitoba will face off for the bronze tomorrow starting at 2 PM AT, while the gold medal game is scheduled for 6 PM AT.
