Groups revealed Women’s Baseball World Cup

OTTAWA- Canada will face five-time defending world champion No. 1 Japan along with No. 4 Australia, No. 9 Cuba, No. 10 Hong Kong and unranked Dominican Republic in the opening round as the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) today announced the groups for the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup® 2018, which will be staged at the USSSA Space Coast Complex in Viera, Florida from August 22-31.

The 12-team event will feature two groups with Group A consisting of No. 3 USA, No. 5 Venezuela, No. 6 Chinese Taipei, No. 7 South Korea, No. 8 Netherlands and unranked Puerto Rico.

The top three finishers from Groups A and B will advance and go head-to-head in the Super Round. The two Women’s National Teams with the best win-loss records following the Super Round will compete for the gold medal on August 31.

“This is always an important and exciting moment when the teams discover their opening round opponents and map out the path needed to claim the Baseball World Cup trophy,” stated WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari in a news release.

The selection process for the Women’s National Team will begin in Montréal, Québec from July 5-8 with the staging of the Women’s Invitational championships. Following the event, athletes will be selected to attend a training camp that will determine the roster that will compete in the World Cup.

Canada will enter WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup® 2018 as the No. 2 ranked nation according to the latest edition of the WBSC Women’s Baseball Rankings thanks in part to a silver medal performance at the most recent Women’s Baseball World Cup in 2016. Since the Women’s Baseball World Cup was first held in 2004, Canada has captured five medals including three bronze (2004, 2006, 2012) and two silver medals (2008, 2016) in seven all-time events.
