Junior National Team Training Camp Notebook

AJAX, Ontario – After nearly 18 months of inactivity because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Junior National Team program has resumed in-person baseball activities with a Training Camp at the Ajax Sportsplex, site of the 2015 Pan Am Games.

Thirty-eight athletes are in camp with fourteen inter-squad games scheduled from August 19-September 1 at 1:30PM each day.

Following camp, a roster will be selected from training camp participants to play in a seven-game friendship series against the United States’ 18U squad in Florida.

August 31 – CANADA RED 3, CANADA GREY 2 (BOX SCORE)

Canada Red rode the arms of Carson Hindmarsh (Saskatoon, SK), Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) and Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON) and mustered enough offence to come up with a 3-2 win over Canada Grey in the final intrasquad contest of training camp.

Hindmarsh fanned five batters over 4.2 innings of work without allowing an earned run while Frers and Pineau worked two innings apiece with one and two strikeouts respectively.

Red struck for two runs in the second inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit with Lachlan Maude (Toronto, ON) coming up with an RBI double while Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) scored on a wild pitch.

Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON) had given Grey a 1-0 lead in the first on a double that went off the fence in left-centre while Alexis Gravel (Repentigny, QC) doubled in Grey’s second run of the game in the seventh.

Jérémy Pilon (Valleyfield, QC) worked three scoreless innings for Grey giving up just one hit and striking out five.

August 30 – CANADA RED 1, CANADA GREY 1 (BOX SCORE)

An old-fashioned pitcher’s diel took place today with six pitchers combining to allow just two runs and six hits as Canada Grey and Canada Red tied, 1-1.

Red opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON) solo home run before Caleb Clark’s (Orillia, ON) sac-fly in the seventh cashed in Oliver Mabee (Victoria, BC) who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC) allowed the homer to Ochoa but that was the only damage in his 3.1 innings outing where he struck out five while Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, ON) worked four scoreless innings allowing just a pair of walks while fanning five.

For Red, Owen Millar (Burlington, ON) was unhittable over five innings of work where he walked two and struck out five batters while Alexis Gravel (Repentigny, QC) gave up just one hit and struck out one batter over two innings.

Conor Pote (Sherwood Park, AB) allowed one run on one hit and had one strikeout in two innings of work.

August 29 – CANADA RED 9, CANADA GREY 4 (BOX SCORE)

Jacob Zibin (Langley, BC), Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) and Louka Daoust (Repentigny, QC) all homered while Turner Spoljaric (Lisle, ON) tossed 4.1 strong innings on the mound to lead Canada Red to a 9-4 victory over Canada Grey.

Zibin hit a solo shot in the fifth as Red built a 6-1 lead while Chee-Aloy and Daoust hit back-to-back homers in the ninth.

Grey took a 1-0 lead in the first before Grey responded with three runs in the home half of the frame highlighted by a Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, QC) RBI double.

Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) had a pair of hits, one RBI and two stolen bases for a Grey squad that stole eight bases on the afternoon in the loss.

Matthew Grabmann (Dartmouth, NS) was a bright spot on the mound for Grey working three scoreless innings without allowing a hit while striking out two.

August 28 – CANADA RED 5, CANADA GREY 5 (BOX SCORE)

Nate Ochoa’s (Burlington, ON) solo home run in the bottom of the ninth brought his Canada Red squad even with Canada Grey as both sides battled to a 5-5 draw as intrasquad action continued at the Ajax Sportspex.

Grey had taken in a 5-4 lead in the top-half of the frame when Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) tripled home the go ahead run with two down in the inning.

Grey had worked a 4-2 lead after six innings courtesy a Jacob Zibin (Langley, BC) solo homer only to see Grey respond with runs in each of the last three innings to tie the score.

Jordan Woods (Oakville, ON) worked five innings of one run ball for Grey scattering five hits and walk with three strikeouts while Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, QC) and Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) both saw action out of Grey’s bullpen.

For Red Alexis Gravel (Repentigny, QC) had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a pair of doubles and one RBI while Came Gurney (Scotland, ON) and Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) knocked in a run each.

Caleb Clark (Orillia, ON) and Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) shared the pitching duties and both recorded four strikeouts.

August 27 – CANADA RED 11, CANADA GREY 4 (BOX SCORE)

Louka Daoust (Repentigny, QC) and Sam White (Aurora, ON) both homered while Boston Warkentin (Delta, BC) struck out seven batters over 4.2 innings of work to lead Canada Red to an 11-4 victory over Canada Grey.

Daoust has swung a hot bat all camp and that continued today with a 4-for-5 day at the plate including a three-run homer in the eighth, two doubles and four RBI.

White’s homer came in the second and was a three-run shot to left as Red built a 6-0 lead after two innings.

For Canada Grey, Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) drilled a two-run homer in the ninth inning while Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON) finished with a pair of hits including a double and one RBI.

August 26 – CANADA RED 6, CANADA GREY 6 (BOX SCORE)

Joshua Jones (Blainville, QC) belted a game-tying, two-run homer in the top of the eighth to pull Canada Grey even with Canada Red as both sides played to a 6-6 tie as the Junior National Team Training Camp reached the halfway mark.

Jones finished his day 3-for-4 including a double while Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) went 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and scored a pair of runs.

For Red, Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) was credit with three RBI as he finished 1-for-3 while Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) and Cam Gurney (Scotland, ON) each tripled and scored twice.

August 25 – CANADA RED 2, CANADA GREY 0 (BOX SCORE)

Owen Millar (Burlington, ON) spun 4.2 innings of scoreless ball and fanned six batters while Conor Pote (Sherwood Park, AB) added a scoreless inning of relief to lead Canada Red to a 2-0 shutout win over Canada Grey.

The game was scoreless until the fifth when a two-out error allowed Colin Cymbalista (Pickering, ON) to scamper home from third with the game’s first run. Sam White (Aurora, ON) lifted a sac-fly to centre in the sixth to add an insurance marker.

For Canada Grey, Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings while Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, ON) allowed one earned run over 2.1 innings of work with two strikeouts.

Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) had a pair of doubles in the loss.

August 24 – CANADA GREY 14, CANADA RED 11 (BOX SCORE)

Louka Daoust (Repentigny, QC) belted an eighth inning grand slam and had five RBI as Canada Grey outlasted Canada Red, 14-11, in an all-out offensive affair. Sam White (Aurora, ON) helped Grey driving in four runs including a two-run double in the fourth while Jacob Zibin (Langley, BC) went 3-for-4 with two runs driven in.

Caleb Clark (Orillia, ON) had a day at the plate for Red belting a solo home run in the ninth and led off the seventh with a triple to eventually score the tying run as both clubs were deadlocked after seven.

Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON) drove in three runs while Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, NS) and Kayden Hleucka (Medicine Hat, AB) knocked in two apiece.  

August 23 – CANADA GREY 9, CANADA RED 3 (BOX SCORE)

Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) drove in three runs while Caleb Clark (Orillia, ON) and Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) combined to allow just one earned run over 8.1 innings to leads Canada Grey to a 9-3 win over Canada Red. Miller’s single in the first led to Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON) scoring the game’s first run before a Miller double in the third cashed in another run as Grey built a 6-0 lead after three innings.

Clark lasted 4.2 innings on the mound without giving up an earned run where he scattered two hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts while Usselman tossed 3.2 innings with one run on four hits and three walks and three strikeouts.

Cameron Gurney (Scotland, ON) kept his hot bat going with a 3-for-4 game at the plate including a double and two runs scored.

Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, QC) turned in a solid performance for Red with two scoreless innings of work on the mound with two strikeouts while smacking a pair of doubles at the plate with one RBI.

August 22 – CANADA GREY 5, CANADA RED 3 (BOX SCORE)

Sam White (Aurora, ON) and Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, QC) hit back-to-back homer to key a three-run sixth inning and lead Canada Grey to a 5-3 win over Canada Red.

The bottom of the sixth began with Louka Daoust (Repentigny, QC) leading off the frame with a triple to left field before White took the first pitch he saw over the wall in right field. Villeneuve’s blast came on a 2-0 count on a hit that cleared the fence in centerfield.

Micah Bucknam (Abbotsford, BC) twirled 4.1 innings of solid ball on the mound allowing one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts while Jérémy Pilon (Valleyfield, QC) gave up a pair of runs over four innings of work with five strikeouts.

Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) continued to be a table setter out of the leadoff spot for Grey with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with one run scored and two stolen bases while Joshua Jones (Blainville, QC) picked up two hits and walked twice over four trips to the plate.

Boston Warkentin (Delta, BC) spun four scoreless innings for Red allowing just two hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Red was paced by Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) who collected two huts including a two-run homer in the ninth while Cameron Gurney (Scotland, ON) drove in a run with a single in the first and tripled prior to Miller’s homer in the final frame.

August 21 – CANADA GREY 6, CANADA RED 4 (BOX SCORE)

Alexis Gravel (Repentigny, QC) was a one-man show pitching three hitless innings with six strikeouts while belting a two-run triple in the fourth inning as part of a two hit day to lead Canada Grey to a 6-4 victory over Canada Red.

An error in the top of the sixth was the only runner that would reach off Gravel as he proceeded to get the next batter on a fielder’s choice before striking out two batters and worked perfect frames in the seventh and eighth innings.

Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON) picked up a pair of hits for Grey and scored one run while Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON), Cameron Gurney (Scotland, ON) and Jacob Miller (Oshawa, ON) were credited with RBI.

Colin Cymbalista (Pickering, ON) put Canada Red up early in the second with a two-run homer to left off Grey starter Liam Adamson (London, ON) while Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) and Sam White (Aurora, ON) each doubled and had two hits apiece.

August 20 – CANADA GREY 7, CANADA RED 3 (BOX SCORE)

Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, QC) went 4-for-5 and knocked in a pair of runs to lead Canada Grey to a 7-3 win over Canada Red. Owen Millar (Burlington, ON) and Matthew Grabmann (Dartmouth, NS) worked 3.2 innings apiece for Grey allowing one earned run each with Millar striking out one batter while Grabmann registered six punchouts. Jordan Woods (Oakville, ON) provided one inning of scoreless relief with one strikeout.

Louka Daoust (Repentigny, QC) kept swinging a hot bat with two hits on the afternoon including a double while Joshua Jones (Blainville, QC) added a pair of hits and drove in one run. Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) wreaked havoc on the base paths swiping three bags, all coming in the seventh inning including a successful double-steal of home with Daoust stealing second on the play.

For Canada Red, Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC) fanned seven batters over four innings on the mound that saw the right-hander allow just two hits while Alexis Gravel (Repentigny, QC) doubled in a run in the seventh.

August 19 – CANADA RED 5, CANADA GREY 3 (BOX SCORE)

Louka Daoust (Repentigny, QC) went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Turner Spoljaric (Lisle, ON) and Carter Krawchuck (St. Catharines, ON) turned in solid performances on the mound to lead Canada Red to a 5-3 win over Canada Grey. 

Spoljaric allowed just one run over four innings of work that saw him scatter three hits and four walks with three strikeouts while Krawchuck fanned eight batters in his four innings on the mound. He allowed two runs on two hits and seven walks.

Jacob Zibin (Langley, BC) knocked in a pair of runs for Red while Oliver Mabee (Victoria, BC) cracked a doubled and walked twice.

Cole Patrick (Markham, ON) doubled in the fifth inning to bring in two runs and Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) singled to centre to bring in a run in the third to pace Grey’s offence.

On the mound, Anson McGorman (Parksville, BC) struck out five batters over 3.2 innings pitched where he allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks. Conor Pote (Sherwood Park, AB) followed with 1.2 scoreless innings while Alexis Gravel (Repentigny, QC), Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) and Micah Bucknam (Abbotsford, BC) each worked a scoreless frame.
