More supremacy at Canada Games

CHARLOTTETOWN – One giant stakes its claim, while another is slain in evening action at the Canada Games.

Ontario scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put their matchup with Newfoundland to bed, taking a 10-0 mercy rule win.

Leading the way offensively for Ontario was Andrew Firth (London, ON) who was 3-for-3 including a pair of doubles and three RBI. Sean Bignall (Brampton, ON) for the second time today had himself a solid game, going 2-for-3, driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice.

Kristopher Muccilli threw all five innings for Ontario, allowing only two singles while striking out six Newfoundland hitters.

In other action, British Columbia did not enjoy the same success in the evening as they did earlier today as Saskatchewan came up with a solid effort and chopped down one of the tournament favourites by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 4-3 win.

With the game tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, Craig Hucul (Saskatoon, SK) hit a one out double putting the winning run in scoring position. After Hucul moved to third on a Dylan Ramsay (Saskatoon, SK) ground out, Jon Cotter (Moose Jaw, SK) drove him in with a game winning single to give Saskatchewan the upset victory.

B.C. and Saskatchewan went back and forth early on, each scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. B.C. scored their two runs on an error from Evan Zerff (Regina, SK), while Taylor Van De Sype (Radville, SK) drove in both Saskatchewan runs with a double.

Saskatchewan took the lead in the bottom of the second when Zerff redeemed himself for his earlier error with an RBI single to give Saskatchewan a 3-2 advantage. B.C. tied the game in the top of the seventh when Brandon Willier (Vancouver, BC) hit an RBI double to knot it at 3-3 before Saskatchewan closed it out in the bottom half of the seventh.

Also in evening action, Alberta made easy work of Prince Edward Island, scoring four in the first, six in the third and three in the fourth to take out P.E.I. 13-2 in five innings.

Jamie Mitchell (Calgary, AB) got a pair of hits, both doubles, including a two-run double in the four run first. Rylan Chin (Strathmore, AB) also got a pair of hits for Alberta, going 2-for-3 with a double a three RBI.

Brandon Zelisko (Spruce Grove, AB) threw a five inning complete game to earn the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and a walk whereas he struck out six.
