Ontario captures fourth consecutive Women’s Invitational

OTTAWA – An incredible baseball game had an incredible finish with Ontario using some of their championship magic that they’ve used over the years as they came away with an extra innings, 9-8 win over previously unbeaten Québec Élite to win the 2022 Women’s Invitational in Stonewall, Manitoba.

Ontario trailed 4-1 heading into the fourth before they struck for three runs to tie it with Jessica MacPherson coming up with an RBI double while Caitlin Tomotsugu knocked in a run on a triple.

Both teams traded run in the fifth before Ontario looked to take a commanding lead with a three run seventh only to see Québec score three of their own to send the game to extras.

With Ella Matteucci standing on second base after a double, Brittany Chan singled to centre to score the eventual game winning run.

Tomotsugu allowed a single to Daphnée Gélinas to open the bottom of the inning before striking out three batters to preserve the win.

Québec’s Alexane Fournier had three hits in the loss and drove in two runs.

BC wins bronze

Earlier in the day, BC’s Emi Saki tossed a complete game without giving up an earned run and went 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two RBI to lead her squad to a 7-2 win over Québec Select to win the bronze medal.

The bronze medal is BC’s first medal at the Women’s Invitational since winning the event in 2016 and fifth medal overall.

Semifinal action saw Ontario 1 defeat Québec Select 14-6 while Québec Élite beat BC, 5-1.

In placement games, Nova Scotia topped Saskatchewan, 7-6 in the eighth place game while Alberta beat Ontario 2, 5-2 to claim fifth place.
