Rain and Shine: Games Begin at National Championships
August 22, 2013

Ottawa, ON – Folks in Vaughan, Ontario, woke up to gloomy skies, meanwhile in Bedford, Nova Scotia, the sun was shining bright to kick off a beautiful day for baseball.  Windsor, Ontario saw a mix of sun and cloud to kick off their day, while games in Spruce Grove, Alberta, do not begin until 1:00p.m. MDT (3:00p.m. ET).

The following is a recap of all games that took place this morning.

15U Bantam Boys

Saskatchewan 5  Manitoba 4

Daniel Berg’s (Saskatoon, SK) walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh catapulted his team to a victory over their provincial neighbors, Manitoba.  The home run capped off a great game for Berg, who had two hits and two RBI.  It was a tough loss for Manitoba, but they had many players who stood out.  Riley Shamray (Oak River, MB) and Morgan Geekie (Strathclair, MB) combined for five hits.

Prince Edward Island 10  Newfoundland and Labrador 1

Patrick Gallant (New Glasgow, PE) drove in the first of his team’s four first inning runs as PEI rolled through Newfoundland and Labrador 10-1.  Hunter McQuaid (Cornwall, PE) also supported the offense with two hits and three RBI while Kyle Pinksen (Kensington, PE) had three hits and two RBI in the win.  Pinksen was also spectacular on the mound going six full innings and striking out six.

Nova Scotia 5  New Brunswick 4

Zachery Zinck (Bridgewater, NS) recorded the final four outs to pick up the save as his team would hang on for a one run victory over New Brunswick.  Aidan O’Brien (Hebbville, NS) led the charge offensively by reaching base four times and scoring twice, while Nathan Livingston (Glace Bay, NS) also contributed with two RBI.  Declan Buckle (Dieppe, NB) had two hits and two RBI for New Brunswick.

16U Bantam Girls Invitational

Ontario 12  Newfoundland and Labrador 6

Down 6-4 heading into the fifth inning, Ontario stormed back with eight unanswered runs to double-up Newfoundland and Labrador 12-6.  Leadoff hitter Lindsay Wilcox (Waterdown, ON) was a hazard on the base paths scoring four runs, while Emma Carr (Toronto, ON) had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.  Victoria Curran (Mount Pearl, NL) had two RBI in the losing effort for her team.

Alberta 19  Manitoba 9

Alberta bats were scorching all day as they took care of Manitoba in a high-scoring affair.  They took advantage of some defensive miscues by Manitoba and made them pay for it.  Meghan Cameron (Rimbey, AB) and Dominique Boudreau (Drayton Valley, AB) combined for three hits, three runs scored and five RBI in the win.  Sam Geekie (Strathclaire, AB) had two hits and two RBI in the defeat.

Québec 8  Nova Scotia 5

Tied entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Québec would score three straight runs to take the lead and hold on for the 8-5 win.  Isabella Denis (Cardiac, QC) showed why she is an all-around player by belting a solo home run and pitching the two and two-thirds shutout inning to pick up the win on the mound.  Clean-up hitter Jenna Jackson (Steam Mill, NS) racked up two hits and two runs scored for her squad.

Senior Men

Manitoba 5  New Brunswick (1)  2

Mitch Olson’s (Deloraine, MB) single scored two runs, and his team would add on another three in the first inning to cruise past New Brunswick 5-2.  On the mound, Anthony Friesen (Pilot Mound, MB) was relied upon when needed and went on to pitch a complete game to earn the victory.  Jody Peterson (Fredericton, MB) was a bright spot for his team, going 3/3 at the plate.

New Brunswick (2) 14  Newfoundland and Labrador 6

New Brunswick exploded right out of the gate with nine first inning runs and never looked back on route to the convincing win.  Six different players scored at least one run including three from Orry Cooke (Mirimachi, NB), who also had two hits and three RBI.  Robert Gallant (Miramichi, NB) also had three RBI in the win.  Andrew Symonds (St. John’s, NL) was a star for his team with two hits and four RBI.
