August 27, 2006

Saskatchewan broke open a close 2-1 game with 9 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to win a mercy rule shortened game against Newfoundland 11-1 and take the 5th place consolation game. The win, Saskatchewan's second of the tournament, was sparked by the bats of Chaise Cardinal and Matt Ring, both of whom had 2 run doubles in the 5th. Travis Gerwing got the start for Saskatchewan and went the distance, giving up only 3 hits and striking out 10. For Newfoundland, Ryan Works was named MVP for 5 strong innings of pitching. At the plate, Daniel Phillips had a strong game, getting 2 of Newfoundland's 3 hits, including a double and a single, and batting in their only run.
