Lawrie Earns Spot on Top 50 Prospects List

OTTAWA- For the second consecutive year Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC) has appeared on MLB.com Top 50 Prospects list. Lawrie, who comes in at #28, is the lone Canadian listed and one of only two second basemen in the top 50.

Lawrie made headlines in December as he was dealt from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitcher Shaun Marcum.

Playing for Huntsville in the Southern League (Double-A) as 20 year-old in 2010, Lawrie hit .285 with eight homeruns and 63 RBI’s to go along with 30 stolen basis. He also made his second straight appearance in the XM Future’s game during the MLB All- Star Game festivities.

Lawrie, who has represented Canada in numerous international baseball events, including the 2008 Olympics and 2009 World Baseball Classic, is excited at the prospect of playing in Canada.

“It's something special," Lawrie said in an interview with MLB.com after the trade. “The opportunity for me to get to play Major League Baseball in any city is an honour, but this is a bonus because of the fact that it's in Canada.”

Lawrie was originally drafted in the first round (16th overall) in the 2008 MLB Draft, making him the highest Canadian position player ever drafted.
