National Championships: Final day of round-robin

NORTH YORK- Today marked the final day of round-robin action at both the Senior Women’s Invitational and Bantam Girls Championships.

Saturday will see semi-final and medal games played at Bond Park in North York.

Bantam Girls

Ontario 22 Ontario (2) 2

Ontario collected their second win of the tournament with a 22-2 drubbing of Ontario 2. The offensive stars of the game were Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh, ON) and Mikaela Kehoe (Amherstburg, ON), each with 2 hits, 2 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. Erika Martin (Scarborough, ON) was the winning pitcher having gone 3 innings giving up 2 runs and striking out 3 batters.

Québec 11 Alberta 1

Québec continued to roll along with an 11-1 victory over Alberta to remain unbeaten. Daphnée Gélinas (Le Gardeur, QC), Élisabeth Auger (Québec, QC) and Rosie Lyard (Beaupré, QC) each had 2 hits during the game. Québec scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning and followed that up with 4 more runs in the 4th. Gélinas was the winning pitcher as she fanned 3 Albertans in the game.

Ontario 15 Nova Scotia 2

Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh, ON) put on a show as on the mound and at the plate as Ontario defeated Nova Scotia 15-2. Hillman was dominant on the mound in recording the victory going 4 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk, while striking out 6. At the plate, she was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored.

Ontario (2) 11 Alberta 10

Ontario 2 survived a late rally from Alberta and hung on for an 11-10 victory, their first of the championship. Chelsea Hickey (Kingsville, ON) helped her team on both sides of the ball as she earned the win on the mound and went 4-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Autumn-Sky Letkemen (Red Deer, AB) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Alberta.

Senior Women’s Invitational

Québec 6 Alberta 1

Vanessa Riopel (Repentigny, QC) threw a 1-hitter as Québec defeated Alberta 6-1. Riopel gave up the 1 run in the 6th and struck out 5 batters along the way. Québec was led offensively by Maxandre Desharnais (Sherbrooke, QC) who had 2 hits, 2 RBI’s and scored 2 runs.

Ontario 9 Ontario (2) 2

Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON) threw a complete game and struck out 7 batters as Ontario beat Ontario 2 by a score of 9-2. Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) continued to produce offensively as she had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Martensen also helped her own cause as she scored 2 runs and had 2 hits. Ontario had 14 hits in the game.

BC 12 Nova Scotia 7

BC scored 12 runs in the top of the 1st inning and held off pesky Nova Scotia for 12-7 win. Sydney Elrick (Surrey, BC) and Faythe Lou (Surrey, BC) paced the BC attack as Elrick had 2 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBI’s, while Lou went 3-for-5 with a run scored and 3 RBI’s. Natasha Burgess (Dartmouth, NS) and Laura Whelan (Whites Lake, NS) had 2 hits each and an RBI in a losing cause. Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) was flawless on the mound as she threw 3 innings, walking none and striking out 6 batters to record the win.

Québec 8 Ontario 5

Ontario and Québec squared off and it was Québec who came away with an 8-5 victory. Québec was in front 8-0 thanks to a 5 run 3rd inning where Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON) hit a bases clearing triple to score 3 runs. Ontario started scratching away at the lead but came up short in their quest. Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) paced Ontario offensively as she went 3-for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.  Cynthia Renaud (Gatineau, QC) was the winning pitcher for Québec.

Alberta 19 Nova Scotia 2

Alberta handily defeated Nova Scotia 19-2 which saw them score 12 times in the 4th to earn the mercy win. Seven Alberta players had multi-hit games including Taelor Fredrickson (Saskatoon, SK) who was 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. Paige Wakefield (St. Albert, AB) threw 4 innings to record the win.

BC 18 Ontario (2) 1

BC was too much for Ontario 2 as they easily won by a score of 18-1. Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, BC) had a game to remember as she went 4-for-5 with and RBI and 4 runs scored. Paige McDonnell contributed 4 RBI’s while going 3-for-3.
