Baseball Canada announces Women

OTTAWA- Baseball Canada is pleased to announce the names of 20 players who will make-up the 2011 Women’s National Team. The roster was chosen after the recent Senior Women’s Invitational where Québec took home the gold medal.

The WNT has made their way to Cary, North Carolina where they will participate in a 7-game exhibition series against the US Women’s National Team (split-squads) and the Raleigh Red Sox (men’s club) at the USA Baseball National Training Centre. The series begins on August 2nd and concludes on August 7th.

The roster is a mixture of National Team veterans and also five newcomers who will be wearing the red and white for the first time.

Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) and Ashley Stephenson (Mississauga, ON) have been with the team since its inception in 2004, while Autumn Mills (London, ON) and Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) have been with the club since 2005.

Breanne Wilson-Bennett (Markham, ON), Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON), Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON), Veronika Boyd (Whalley, BC) and Danielle Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) will all be making their National Team debuts.

The coaching staff is welcoming two news members in Sean O’Brien (Barrie, ON) and former WNT player Patricia Landry (St-Étienne-des-Grés, QC).

André Lachance (Ottawa, ON) and Jean-Francois Lacroix (Montréal, QC) return to their familiar roles of Field Manager and Pitching Coach respectively.

The International Friendship Series is an important event for WNT as they prepare for the 2012 Women's World Cup in Edmonton, AB.
