Canada loses heartbreaker

Cary, North Carolina- USA Blue scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th, erasing a 3-1 deficit, to earn a 4-3 victory over the Women’s National Team as the International Friendship Series continued.

With Jessica Bérubé (Québec, QC) on the mound, USA Blue tied the game with 2 RBI singles and scored the winning run with the bases loaded after a Canadian error.

USA Blue jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, but WNT starter Autumn Mills (London, ON) was virtually flawless from there as she tossed 5 innings, giving up the 1 run on 3 hits and a walk while fanning 3 USA Blue batters.

Canada tied the score in the 3rd as Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) scored from second base on a Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) double.

Nicole Luchanksi (Edmonton, AB) got thing going in the 5th as she singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and later scored on Amanda Asay’s (Prince George, BC) single to give Canada the lead.

Canada added what they thought to be an insurance run in the 6th when Luchanski picked up her third hit of the game, an RBI single, which scored Ashley Stephenson (Mississauga, ON). Canada was unable to score anymore runs and left 2 runners stranded in the 6th.

Bérubé took over for Mills to start the bottom of the 6th and sat USA Blue down in order before they mounted a comeback in the 7th which would ultimately lead to the loss for Canada.

The loss puts Canada’s record at 2-1 with 4 more games to play in the series.
