Canada uses big inning to beat US

Cary, North Carolina- The Women’s National Team scored 10 runs in the 2nd inning as they cruised to a 13-4 victory over USA Red in International Friendship Series action.

With Canada as the home team, Stephanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) led-off the bottom of the 2nd with a double and after two straight walks, Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) was hit by a pitch which brought home Savoie to open the scoring.

Still in the 2nd and with the score now 5-0, Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) singled to bring in another run. The 10 run inning saw USA Red walk 5 and hit 2 Canadian batters.

Vanessa Riopel (Québec, QC) started for Canada and turned in a stellar performance as she faced only 14 batters in 4 innings of work without giving up a run or a hit. Riopel walked 1 US batter and struck out 1 as well.

Canada kept the runs coming in the 3rd frame as they added 3 more. Savoie singled in a run for her second hit and RBI of the game to lead Canada in both offensive categories.

Shayla Shahsavar (Saskatoon, SK) took over from Riopel in the 5th and got into trouble early. With one out, two errors and walk gave USA Red the bases loaded. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice and USA Red was on the board with their first run of the game.

Shahsavar did not fare much better in the 6th as USA Red scored 2 more runs thanks to 2 singles, a hit batter, a bases loaded walk and a sac-fly. Shahsavar did manage one strikeout through 2 innings of work.

In the 7th, USA Red scored one more run off Canadian reliever Danielle Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) who eventually shut the Americans down to secure the win.
