Canada Cup Update: Isherwood spins gem

MONCTON- Clayton Isherwood (Van Anda, BC) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout as defending champion BC opened the Baseball Canada Cup with a 4-0 victory over Alberta.

Early scores from Day 1 of the Canada Cup saw Manitoba edge Nova Scotia 2-1, Saskatchewan beat PEI 9-6 and Ontario defeat Québec 4-2.

Manitoba 2 Nova Scotia 1

Karlin Palidwor (Winnipeg, MB) was the difference on the mound as Manitoba edged Nova Scotia 2-1. Palidwor dazzled as he threw a complete game that included 12 strikeouts. Not to be outdone, Colby Turple (Kennetcook, NS) turned in an equally impressive performance on the mound for Nova Scotia, also fanning 12 and giving up only 3 hits through 6 innings of work.

Manitoba opened the scoring in the 3rd inning when Colin Bouchard (Winnipeg, MB) crossed home plate after a double off the bat of Aaron Horanski (Cook’s Creek, MB). After Nova Scotia tied the score in the 5th, Manitoba retook the lead when Luke Seburn (Winnipeg, MB) scored from third base on a passed ball.

Saskatchewan 9 PEI 6

In a back and forth contest, Saskatchewan got the last laugh, scoring 5 times in the 7th inning for a 9-6 win over PEI. Saskatchewan took a 3-0 lead into the 4th only to see PEI explode for 5 runs in the bottom portion of the inning. With 2 runs already in, thanks to 2 bases loaded walks, Tyson Arsenault (Summerside, PEI) hit a single, bringing home 2 more runs to highlight the 5-run 4th.

Saskatchewan got one of the runs back in the 5th before their 5 run 7th put them on their way to victory. The big blow in the 7th was a 2-run double from Jager Toffan (Regina, SK) who collect 4 RBI’s on the day.

PEI staged a bit of a comeback in the bottom of the 7th before Saskatchewan’s Brandon Radmacher (White City, SK) recorded the final two outs with the bases loaded on his way to picking up the victory.

BC 4 Alberta 0

Clayton Isherwood’s 2-hit gem saw him strikeout 10 and only walk 1 batter as BC blanked Alberta 4-0. Tyler Krahn (Abbotsford, BC) hit a solo homer in the 5th and also scored 2 runs to lead BC’s attack while Brendan McCarthy (Nanaimo, BC) had 2 hits and an RBI.

Ontario 4 Québec 2

Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON) blasted a 2-run homer as part of a 3-run 5th inning as Ontario opened with a 4-2 win over Québec. Québec managed a run in both the 6th and 7th innings but Ontario’s Jake Marks (Brights Grove, ON) was able to shut the door to earn the save. Mathieu Girard (Varennes, QC) had 2 hits and an RBI in a losing cause for Québec. Adam Anderson (Georgetown, ON) picked up the win for Ontario after going 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5.
