National Championships: Playoffs set for Sunday

OTTAWA-Round-robin action concluded at both the Midget and Junior Championships and semi-final match-ups have been determined.

On Sunday at the Midget Championship - Ontario will face Québec in one semi-final while Alberta will battle Saskatchewan in the other semi-final.

At the Junior Championship all three Ontario teams have advanced to the final four as Ontario 1 will take-on Windsor in one semi-final while Québec entertains Ontario 2 in the second semi-final.

The following is a recap of final round-robin games at both championships.

Midget

Alberta 10 BC 5

Alberta scored eight runs in the seventh inning to beat BC 10-5 and advance to the semi-finals. Blake Patterson (Calgary, AB) had the big blow of the inning as his double cleared the bases, scoring three runs. Ramon Valdez (Chestermere, AB) contributed a triple that scored two runs during the seventh.

Nova Scotia 14 Newfoundland 3

Mike Tobin (Antigonish, NS) went 4-for-5 with three RBI’s and three runs scored as Nova Scotia thumped Newfoundland 14-3. Craig Murray (New Glasgow, NS) went 5 1/3 innings on the mound and struck out nine to record the win. Newfoundland’s Travis Drover (Upper Island Cove, NL) had a hit and two RBI’s in the loss.

Saskatchewan 3 New Brunswick 1

Karsten Hoehn (Lanigan, SK) allowed only one run in 5 1/3 innings as Saskatchewan advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-1 win over New Brunswick. Graeme Scott (Saskatoon, SK) had a two singles, one RBI and scored a run. Tanner Banks (Fredericton, NB) threw a complete game for New Brunswick and struck out five while also collecting two hits and two stolen bases in the loss.

Manitoba 3 Regina 1

Manitoba broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth to defeat Regina 3-1. Both runs scored on Paul Esteves’ (Winnipeg, MB) single which included an error in the outfield which brought home the second run. Karlin Palidwor (Winnipeg, MB) came on in the seventh and struck out two batters to earn the save.

At the conclusion of the round-robin placement games were played which saw Regina beat Newfoundland 8-5 in the 9/10 game; BC shutout New Brunswick 3-0 in the 7/8 game and Manitoba edge Nova Scotia 3-2 in the 5/6 game.


Junior

Windsor 7 Ontario (2) 5

Windsor wrapped up round-robin play undefeated with a 7-5 win over Ontario 2. Jason Schneider (Amherstburg, ON) pitched five innings of relief and only gave up a run to earn the win while Cameron Goddard (Windsor, ON) had two hits and two RBI’s.

Ontario (1) 6 BC 5

Ontario 1 scored three runs in the top of the seventh and defeated BC 6-5 to earn a berth in the semi-finals. The three runs came with the bases loaded as a hit batter, a walk and a fielder’s choice scored runners from third to give Ontario 1 the lead. Travis Black (London, ON) and Jon Celestino (London, ON) each had two RBI’s while Cam Firth (London, ON) hit a three-run homer for BC.

Nova Scotia 6 Newfoundland 0

Nova Scotia scored five times in the first inning which was more than enough runs to shutout Newfoundland 6-0. Gary Strowbridge (Cole Harbour, NS) had a single in the first that scored two runs and Alex Ostrov (Timberlea, NS) tossed a complete-game two-hitter for the win.

Manitoba 2 New Brunswick 1

Nathan Christiuk’s (Dufrost, MB) run scoring ground-out in the fifth proved to be the winning run as Manitoba edged New Brunswick 2-1.

Placement games saw Newfoundland beat New Brunswick 4-1 to claim the 9th spot; BC defeat Saskatchewan 4-1 to earn 7th place and Nova Scotia beat Manitoba 10-8 to earn 5th place.
