National Championships: August 26th recap

Peewee Western (Nanaimo, BC)

Nanaimo-10 SK1 Saskatoon Braves-5

Nanaimo continued its offensive surge with a 10-5 win over the Saskatoon Braves. Samuel Vavila (Kamloops, BC) led the way going 4-for-4, including a double and one RBI while Lenn Nakatsuka (Nanaimo, BC) collected three hits and three RBI’s. Jordan Malainey (Saskatoon, SK) had two singles and one RBI for Saskatoon.

MB1 Midwest-9 AB2 Red Deer-6

Midwest scored three runs in the fifth and another two in the sixth to earn a 9-6 comeback win over Red Deer. Jayden Bergen (Altona, MB) had a single, one RBI and scored a run in the fifth as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Noah Lemoine (St. Lazare, MB) was given the win after throwing four innings on the mound and Chad Kilimnik (Russell, MB) hit a two-run homer.

AB1 Sherwood Park-7 SK2 Saskatoon Blue Jays-6

Sherwood Park scored three times in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 7-6 win over the Saskatoon Blue Jays. Winning pitcher Darrin Reay (Sherwood Park, AB) threw three innings and allowed only one run on two hits and a walk while fanning one batter.

SK1 Saskatoon Braves-10 MB1 Midwest-6

Saskatoon had thirteen hits, including a three-run homer from Jonathon Duff (Regina, SK), to beat Midwest 10-6. Cale Kindrachuk (Saskatoon, SK) enjoyed a 4-for-4 day that saw him double and score two runs.

Other scores included Nanaimo blanking Red Deer 14-0 and Abbotsford proving too much for Winnipeg South with a 12-1 victory.

Bantam Boys (Vaughan, ON)

Québec-9 PEI-2

PEI committed five errors and Québec took advantage to remain undefeated with a 9-2 win. Abraham Toro-Fernandes (Montréal, QC) went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Xavier Bilodeau (Québec, QC) earned the win after pitching three innings and striking out five batters.

New Brunswick-12 Newfoundland-4

Corey Kavanagh (Fredericton, NB) got the win on the mound and fell a homerun short of the cycle with one RBI as New Brunswick beat Newfoundland 12-4. Kavanagh struck out eight through 5 2/3 innings of work while Mitchell Hazlett (Riverview, NB) went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s.

BC-10 Manitoba-5

BC used nine hits to score ten runs as they doubled-up on Manitoba 10-5. Sam Stevenson Victoria, BC) and Tanner Hess (Victoria, BC) each collected two hits and Graddy Zubaidi (White Rock, BC) threw four innings on the mound that included six strikeouts.

In other action, Vaughan cruised to an 11-1 win over PEI.

Senior Men (Miramichi, NB)

NS1 Dartmouth-4 ON2 Mississauga-2

Marek Deska (Toronto, ON) threw a complete-game that included ten strikeouts as Dartmouth defeated Mississauga 4-2. Dartmouth received all of the offence they would need from a Colin Johnson (Dartmouth, NS) two-run homer and a Rob Gillis (Toronto, ON) solo blast. Mississauga’s Jerome Smith (Mississauga, ON) hit a solo homerun in the loss.

New Brunswick-4 Newfoundland-3

John Burns’ (Fredericton, NB) three-run homer in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference as New Brunswick edged Newfoundland 4-3. Burns also had a single and double to lead the New Brunswick offence. Newfoundland did not go away quietly as they put two runs across in the bottom of the seventh before Jake Waugh (Fredericton, NB) recorded the final out of the game. Mike O’Neil (St. John’s, NL) had three singles and one RBI for Newfoundland.

Chatham-2 ON1 Windsor-1

In front of an estimated 3,000 fans, host Chatham sent the faithful home happy with a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Windsor. Darren Hardy’s (Miramichi, NB) RBI double sparked a two-run fourth inning and Matthew Jenkins (Miramichi, NB) gave-up one run on six hits in a complete-game victory. Windsor’s Steve Teno (LaSalle, ON) had six strikeouts while taking the loss.

In other action, Jordy Alexander (Burnaby, BC) tossed a complete-game four-hitter as BC remained undefeated with a 5-1 win over Halifax.
