Canada clinches first place, will play Australia Tuesday

Chitre, Panama-With USA’s win over Panama today, Canada clinched first place in Group 1 after round one at the 39th IBAF Baseball World Cup. The team has travelled from Panama City to Chitre and will open the second round against Australia, who earned the fourth seed in Pool B, tomorrow afternoon (2:00pm CT) at Omar Torrijos Stadium in Santiago.

The rest of Canada’s schedule for round two is listed below:

  • October 11th  2:00pm vs. Australia (Omar Torrijos Stadium - Santiago)
  • October 12th  7:30pm vs. South Korea (Rico Cedeno - Chitre)
  • October 13th  2:00pm vs. Venezuela (Rod Carew - Panama City)            
  • October 14th  2:00pm vs. Cuba (Rod Carew - Panama City)

Following round two, the eight teams will be seeded from 1st to 8th. The medal and placement round will see the 1st & 2nd seeds meet for gold, 3rd & 4th play for bronze, 5th & 6th meet for fifth place and 7th & 8th will play to decide the seventh spot. Medal and placement games will take place on October 15th.

Canada’s record heading into round two is 2-1 as they have carried over their wins against Netherlands and USA, while also carrying over their loss to Panama.

The round two standings are as follows with records in parentheses:

South Korea (1-2)
Panama (1-2)
Venezuela (1-2)
USA (1-2)
