Bantam Championships: Teams are starting to round into form as Day 2 carries on

OTTAWA – Round-robin play enters its second day at both the bantam boys and bantam girls championships carry on.  Teams are starting to round into form as the medal round starts to approach.  The medal round for the girls tournament will run all day tomorrow while the medal round for the boys tournament begins tomorrow evening.

Bantam Boys Championship

Saskatchewan 19  Newfoundland and Labrador 7

Saskatchewan recorded 19 runs off 17 hits to pound Newfoundland and Labrador for the win via the mercy rule.  Both teams flashed their offensive capabilities throughout the first few innings, but Saskatchewan’s offense was just too strong.  Many players contributed in this game, but Blake Robertson’s (Unity, SK) four runs scored and Jerad Coghill’s (Lloydminster, SK) four RBI really stood out.  Tyler Boland (St. John’s, NL) scored in both of his plate appearances and also had two RBI for his club.

Vaughan 11  Alberta 3

Down by one run through the first four and a half innings, Vaughan exploded offensively with a ten run fifth inning to blow past Alberta.  Colin Robinson (Windsor, ON) put his stamp on the game in the fifth inning with a bases clearing triple, and Luke VanRycheghem (Chatham, ON) pitched seven full innings and striking out seven in the process.  Kurt Meeberg (Edmonton, AB) had two RBI in the defeat.

Québec 7  Nova Scotia 6

Down 6-5 heading into the sixth inning, Québec scored two runs to take the lead and then Jacob Dugal (Varennes, QC) shut the door the rest of the way to give them the win.  Dugal also helped his own cause by doing some damage with the bat as he went a perfect 2/2 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Nova Scotia’s Mitchel Leblanc (Truro, NS) did his best for his team, driving in two runs and also scoring twice.

PEI 11 Newfoundland and Labrador 0

After a scoreless first inning, PEI cranked up the intensity by scoring six runs in the second inning to build the early lead.  They would add to that total with five more runs to cruise past Newfoundland and Labrador.  Nine different players crossed home plate for PEI, who got contributions from everyone in the lineup.  Winning pitcher Matt Barlow (Summerside, PE) combined with two other pitchers to allow only two hits throughout the game.

Bantam Girls Championship

Ontario 9  BC 7

Ontario scored all of their nine runs within a two innings span, which turned out to be the difference in defeating BC.  Three third inning runs and six fourth inning runs, along with solid relief pitching from Samantha Collins (Toronto, ON) was the reason Ontario was the reason Ontario won the game.  Emma Car (Toronto, ON) and Marylena Florio (Woodbridge, ON) each had two RBI while Lora Micki (Kelowna, BC) contributed for her team with three hits.

Alberta 18  Chicago (USA) 13

Alberta’s offense outdueled Chicago’s in what turned into a victory for Alberta in a very high scoring affair.  Chicago got off to a quick start with four first inning runs before Alberta pounded out an astounding 13 of their own before the third inning was finished.  The teams would trade runs back and forth the rest of the way but the deficit was too much to overcome for Chicago.  Shortstop Kelsey Lalor (Red Deer, AB) was the star of the game, driving in EIGHT runs while scoring three herself.  Chicago’s Brittany McNulla (Litchfield, NH, USA) had three hits and two RBI for her club.

Newfoundland and Labrador 10  Nova Scotia 5

Nova Scotia dug themselves an early who in which they could never climb back from, and Newfoundland and Labrador took advantage of that leading to the 10-5 win.  They took a five nothing lead into the third inning and added some insurance runs as the game went on.  The runs proved to be crucial as Nova Scotia eventually scored five runs of their own.  McKenzie Pinet (Mermaid, PE) scored three of her team’s ten runs while also throwing one shutout inning.  Carly Jackson (Amherst, NS) had drove in two runs in her club’s losing effort.

Québec 13  Manitoba 1

Québec scored all their runs within the first two innings and then settled into cruise control the rest of the way to grab the win.  Anne-Sophie Lavallée (Boucherville, QC) sparked her team’s offense with a game high five RBI, and Catherine Labelle (St-Jerome, QC) also helped the cause with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.  Marguerite Cécil ( Ste-Julie, QC) picked up the win on the mound.
